Trend Micro InterScan Gateway Security Appliance M-Series Administrator’s Guide Spam Engine and Pattern File The InterScan Gateway Security Appliance (the appliance) uses the Trend Micro Anti-Spam Engine and Trend Micro spam pattern files to detect and take action against spam messages. Trend Micro updates both the engine and pattern file frequently and makes them available for download. The appliance can download these components through a manual or scheduled update. 14-10 The anti-spam engine uses spam signatures and heuristic rules to filter email messages. It scans email messages and assigns a spam score to each one based on how closely it matches the rules and patterns from the pattern file. The appliance compares the spam score to the user-defined spam detection level. When the spam score exceeds the detection level, the appliance takes action against the spam. For example, spammers sometimes use numerous exclamation marks (!!!!) in their email messages. When the appliance detects a message that uses exclamation marks in this way, it increases the spam score for that email message. Note: Rules in spam pattern differ from pattern to pattern; so, a mail judged as spam in a previous pattern may not be treated as spam in current or later patterns. Administrators cannot modify the method that the anti-spam engine uses to assign spam scores, but they can adjust the detection levels that the appliance uses to decide if messages are spam. Hot Fixes, Patches, and Service Packs After an official product release, Trend Micro often develops hot fixes, patches, and service packs to address outstanding issues, enhance product performance, and add new features. The following is a summary of the items Trend Micro may release: • Hot Fix—a work-around or solution to customer-reported issues. Trend Micro develops and releases hot fixes to specific customers only. • Security Patch—a single hot fix or group of hot fixes suitable for deployment to all customers • Patch—a group of security patches suitable for deployment to all customers • Service Pack—significant feature enhancements that upgrade the product

Check the Trend Micro Web site for information on new hot fix, patch, and service pack releases: http://www.trendmicro.com/download All releases include a readme file that contains installation, deployment, and configuration information. Read the readme file carefully before performing installation. Licenses A license to the Trend Micro software usually includes the right to product updates and pattern file updates. In certain regions, Trend Micro also offers basic technical support (“Maintenance”) for one (1) year from the date of purchase only. After the first year, Maintenance must be renewed on an annual basis at Trend Micro’s then-current Maintenance fees. Maintenance is your right to receive pattern file updates and product updates in consideration for the payment of applicable fees. When you purchase a Trend Micro product, the License you receive with the product describes the terms of the Maintenance for that product. Note: Maintenance expires; your License Agreement does not. If the Maintenance Agreement expires, scanning can still occur, but you will not be able to update the virus pattern file, scan engine, or program files (even manually). Nor will you be entitled to receive technical support from Trend Micro where applicable. Typically, 90 days before Maintenance expires, you will start to receive email notifications, alerting you of the pending discontinuation.
