Trend Micro InterScan Gateway Security Appliance M-Series Administrator’s Guide Updating the Device Image Using the AFFU Use the Trend Micro Appliance Firmware Flash Utility (AFFU) to update the program file (device image) and restore the default configuration. You can also use the AFFU to update the firmware and keep current configuration, but doing so is much more complicated than doing it through the Web console. The only reason to use the more complex method would be to ensure that you have the ability to restore the previous configuration through the Preconfiguration console. 15-4 Tip: Trend Micro recommends updating the program file through the Web console unless you have a compelling need to maintain the "restore previous configuration" feature. Preparing InterScan Gateway Security Appliance for the Device Image Update Before updating the InterScan Gateway Security Appliance device image, ensure that you are familiar with some basic information about your device, as explained below. The Preconfiguration Console The Preconfiguration console is a terminal communications program that enables you to configure or view basic (that is, “preconfiguration” settings). These settings include: • Device Information & Status • Device IP Settings • Interface Settings • System Tools • Advanced Settings • SSH Access Control • Change Password • Log off with saving • Log off without saving
Updating the InterScan Gateway Security Appliance Firmware Access the Preconfiguration console by physically connecting the serial port on a local computer to the nine-pin serial port on the back of the appliance. See Interfacing with the Preconfiguration Console for Device Image Updates on page 15-9 for instructions on accessing the Preconfiguration console. The Preconfiguration console enables basic preconfiguration of appliance settings. Some, limited preconfiguration is possible through the appliance LCD module. Using the LCD Module Use the LCD and control panel on the front of the device to configure appliance network settings, such as the IP address, host name, netmask, gateway, and primary and secondary DNS addresses. Before the Update Before updating the device image, ensure that you have followed these steps: Back up your configuration (unless you have not yet configured anything) (See Backing Up Your Configuration on page 15-6) Get the appliance device image file (See Getting the Appliance Device Image from the Trend Micro Web site on page 15-7) Connect the appliance to a local computer (See Connecting a Local Computer to the Appliance to Deliver the Update on page 15-7) Log in to the appliance using terminal software such as HyperTerminal (See Interfacing with the Preconfiguration Console for Device Image Updates on page 15-9) Verify that the local computer IP address matches that of the appliance (See Getting the IP Address of the Local PC on page 15-12) Put the appliance into rescue mode (See Putting the Appliance into Rescue Mode on page 15-13) 15-5
