about market<strong>in</strong>g and promotion. Thus, the development <strong>of</strong> specific tailored products at a dest<strong>in</strong>ation level is seen to be a way <strong>of</strong><br />

attract<strong>in</strong>g high-end, high-yield tourists through an extremely personalised ‘niche’ service i.e. wellness holidays. Of <strong>in</strong>terest to the<br />

research presented here, the example that Novelli (2005) uses is that <strong>of</strong> a w<strong>in</strong>e grow<strong>in</strong>g region us<strong>in</strong>g the niche product ‘w<strong>in</strong>e’ to<br />

position itself as a niche dest<strong>in</strong>ation. Offer<strong>in</strong>g w<strong>in</strong>e related tourism activities acts as a pull and <strong>in</strong>creases tourist visitation to the<br />

region. Direct expenditure on a range <strong>of</strong> tourism and related bus<strong>in</strong>esses, therefore, translates to a boost <strong>in</strong> economic fortunes,<br />

which expla<strong>in</strong>s why so many w<strong>in</strong>e regions develop w<strong>in</strong>e tourism products and host w<strong>in</strong>e festivals and events.<br />

<strong>Niche</strong> tourism is, therefore, seen to be a response to an <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g number <strong>of</strong> more sophisticated tourists demand<strong>in</strong>g specialist<br />

tourism products. It is a means by which dest<strong>in</strong>ations can focus their <strong>of</strong>fer<strong>in</strong>gs to differentiate their tourism products and compete <strong>in</strong><br />

an <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly competitive and cluttered tourism environment (Sharpley and Telfer, 2002). This critical appraisal presents an<br />

exploration <strong>of</strong> various forms <strong>of</strong> niche tourism i.e. w<strong>in</strong>e, student, festivals and events and yoga/wellness. How dest<strong>in</strong>ations develop<br />

themselves to create unique products and images, which appeal to the tourism market, is a critical component <strong>of</strong> the research. It is<br />

this product-led approach, shaped by a more discern<strong>in</strong>g and experience seek<strong>in</strong>g tourist consumer, which will provide the context for<br />

the publications presented and exam<strong>in</strong>ed further <strong>in</strong> this critical appraisal.<br />

1.3 Overview <strong>of</strong> the Publications<br />

<strong>The</strong> work that has been chosen for this PhD submission reflects the author’s contribution to <strong>The</strong> <strong>Role</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Niche</strong> <strong>Tourism</strong> <strong>Products</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />

Dest<strong>in</strong>ation Development. As standalone areas <strong>of</strong> research, there is considerable literature <strong>in</strong> the areas <strong>of</strong> w<strong>in</strong>e tourism and festival<br />

and event management. <strong>The</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> focus and contribution <strong>of</strong> this body <strong>of</strong> work, however, is an exam<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>of</strong> how these tourism
