Conclusions were drawn from with<strong>in</strong> the four country survey sample frame to exemplify festival management <strong>in</strong>novation and failure.<br />

3.4.2 Primary Research – Key Informants and <strong>in</strong> depth Interviews<br />

Semi-structured, <strong>in</strong>formal, key <strong>in</strong>formants <strong>in</strong>terviews were conducted with owners and managers <strong>of</strong> eight w<strong>in</strong>eries <strong>in</strong> the Margaret<br />

River and Swan Valley regions <strong>of</strong> Western Australia (Papers 1 and 3). Semi –structured <strong>in</strong>terview<strong>in</strong>g is one <strong>of</strong> the most widely used<br />

qualitative techniques as they are somewhat easier to arrange than other forms <strong>of</strong> data collection and data can be analysed <strong>in</strong> a<br />

variety <strong>of</strong> ways (Willig, 2008). Jordan and Gibson (2004) also applaud the flexibility afforded by the use <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>terview<strong>in</strong>g as a tourism<br />

research method. <strong>The</strong>y cite key advantages as: provid<strong>in</strong>g contextual background for studies us<strong>in</strong>g multiple methods (Papers 1-4);<br />

allow<strong>in</strong>g for comparability across <strong>in</strong>terviews; provid<strong>in</strong>g rich, descriptive data with illustrative examples <strong>of</strong> different tourism<br />

experiences; prob<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> special themes (Paper 7) and ensur<strong>in</strong>g high validity as <strong>in</strong>terviewers can ensure that questions are<br />

understood to elicit more <strong>in</strong>-depth responses (Jordan and Gibson, 2004, p.222). <strong>The</strong> <strong>in</strong>terviews lasted up to an hour and revolved<br />

around a set <strong>of</strong> predeterm<strong>in</strong>ed research questions concern<strong>in</strong>g the perception <strong>of</strong> the education experience; the understand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> the<br />

concept <strong>of</strong> consumer education; the importance <strong>of</strong> w<strong>in</strong>e education to the w<strong>in</strong>ery visit and the perceived benefits <strong>of</strong> consumer<br />

education.<br />

In-depth <strong>in</strong>terviews were also held with representatives from the major Ed<strong>in</strong>burgh Festivals, public fund<strong>in</strong>g agencies and<br />

government bodies (Paper 7). Prior to the <strong>in</strong>terview they were sent a copy <strong>of</strong> the proposed research agenda for the Ed<strong>in</strong>burgh<br />

Festivals (ACCESS) allow<strong>in</strong>g for critical reflection. At the <strong>in</strong>terviews stakeholders were then asked to analyse the ACCESS
