Strategic research development and the contribution <strong>of</strong> festivals and events to dest<strong>in</strong>ation development is further explored <strong>in</strong> paper<br />

7 (Carlsen, Robertson and Ali-Knight, 2007). Paper 9 presents the f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> a collaborative research project exam<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the<br />

changes and challenges confront<strong>in</strong>g festival managers <strong>in</strong> four geographic locations – Sweden, Norway, the UK and Australia.<br />

Future prospects and scenarios for festivals based on <strong>in</strong>creased <strong>in</strong>novation or festival failure are <strong>of</strong>fered and festival managers are<br />

challenged to address these critical issues.<br />

An analysis <strong>of</strong> how the image <strong>of</strong> Ed<strong>in</strong>burgh as a tourist dest<strong>in</strong>ation is def<strong>in</strong>ed and enhanced by its reputation and representation as<br />

a Festival City is presented <strong>in</strong> paper 13 (Ali-Knight and Robertson, 2003). <strong>The</strong> role <strong>of</strong> festivals as a vital part <strong>of</strong> the urban<br />

landscape, creat<strong>in</strong>g a brand image for the dest<strong>in</strong>ation is also explored.<br />

F<strong>in</strong>ally, the rise <strong>in</strong> the popularity <strong>of</strong> yoga with<strong>in</strong> primary tourism generat<strong>in</strong>g countries and the development <strong>of</strong> yoga-based tours and<br />

holidays as pull factors for dest<strong>in</strong>ations is discussed <strong>in</strong> paper 11 (Ali-Knight, 2009).<br />

Thus the range <strong>of</strong> publications presented <strong>in</strong> this proposal should be regarded as the framework, <strong>in</strong> its present form, <strong>of</strong> the author’s<br />

contribution to the area <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong> <strong>Role</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Niche</strong> <strong>Tourism</strong> <strong>Products</strong> <strong>in</strong> Dest<strong>in</strong>ation Development. This is obviously fluid and likely to<br />

develop further as research progresses <strong>in</strong> the future.<br />
