group <strong>of</strong> w<strong>in</strong>e tourism researchers. <strong>The</strong> exploratory paper formed the basis for subsequent qualitative focus group work with<strong>in</strong> w<strong>in</strong>e<br />

regions, <strong>in</strong>form<strong>in</strong>g the content and development <strong>of</strong> question<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

<strong>The</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al exploratory Paper, 13, addresses the under researched area <strong>of</strong> how a nations image can pr<strong>of</strong>oundly shape its socio-<br />

economic focus. <strong>The</strong> research aims to explore how the brand image <strong>of</strong> Ed<strong>in</strong>burgh is def<strong>in</strong>ed and how its representation as a<br />

Festival city enhances its reputation. Aga<strong>in</strong> secondary data from key festival policy documents; festival <strong>in</strong>dustry publications and<br />

academic research <strong>in</strong> this field was analysed. <strong>The</strong> conclud<strong>in</strong>g paragraphs <strong>of</strong>fer a series <strong>of</strong> research questions that need to be<br />

addressed <strong>in</strong> future research and a framework for effectively evaluat<strong>in</strong>g the strategic management value <strong>of</strong> place market<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

image. This laid the foundations for the development <strong>of</strong> the ACCESS research agenda.<br />

3.4.6 Data Analysis<br />

Results from the surveys (Papers 2 – 5, 9) were analysed us<strong>in</strong>g the SPSS statistical package. In the first stage the data was<br />

analysed as a whole and descriptive statistics were produced to allow the aggregation <strong>of</strong> ‘raw data <strong>in</strong> numerical terms’ (Neuman,<br />

2000, p.317). Evaluative research was then conducted on the variables to prove significance. <strong>The</strong> comparability <strong>of</strong> f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs across<br />

the two locational subsets was exam<strong>in</strong>ed, and the significance <strong>of</strong> observed similarities and differences <strong>in</strong>vestigated. Chi squared<br />

analysis was used to test for <strong>in</strong>dependence between the two samples and the difference <strong>in</strong> perceptions between the groups were<br />

analysed us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dependent t-tests (Papers 2 – 4). This enabled the identification <strong>of</strong> key issues which could be supported from the<br />

f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> the <strong>in</strong> depth <strong>in</strong>terviews. <strong>The</strong> f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs were then l<strong>in</strong>ked back to the w<strong>in</strong>e tourism research objectives and dissem<strong>in</strong>ated to<br />

the w<strong>in</strong>ery managers, tourism <strong>in</strong>dustry bodies and the academic community. Similarities and difference with<strong>in</strong> the student survey<br />

data (Paper 5) were also exam<strong>in</strong>ed us<strong>in</strong>g ANOVA and <strong>in</strong>dependent sample t-tests. <strong>The</strong> tests showed statistically significant
