Contribution to Knowledge<br />
<strong>The</strong> focus <strong>of</strong> my research has been on niche tourism products with an emphasis on those products that are <strong>in</strong> the growth or<br />
maturity stage <strong>of</strong> the niche tourism life cycle. <strong>The</strong> outputs <strong>of</strong> this have contributed to knowledge <strong>in</strong> the field across the areas <strong>of</strong><br />
theory, practice and policy. <strong>The</strong> contribution to theory has been across three themes which are exam<strong>in</strong>ed further <strong>in</strong> this chapter.<br />
Firstly, <strong>in</strong> establish<strong>in</strong>g visitor pr<strong>of</strong>iles <strong>of</strong> niche tourism consumers, highlight<strong>in</strong>g dist<strong>in</strong>ct market segments with key preferences,<br />
motivations and expectations. <strong>The</strong> three-dimensional model developed <strong>in</strong> Paper 4 <strong>in</strong>corporat<strong>in</strong>g motivation, <strong>in</strong>tention and<br />
<strong>in</strong>tegration <strong>of</strong> travel activities reveals five dist<strong>in</strong>ct market segments <strong>of</strong> w<strong>in</strong>ery visitor. A second strand to my contribution has been<br />
the substantiation that niche products can be a key motivat<strong>in</strong>g factor for tourists <strong>in</strong> dest<strong>in</strong>ation choice, transform<strong>in</strong>g and<br />
regenerat<strong>in</strong>g dest<strong>in</strong>ations through economic, social and political processes. F<strong>in</strong>ally, the development <strong>of</strong> the niche tourism life cycle<br />
model (Figure 2) which outl<strong>in</strong>es the contribution <strong>of</strong> niche products to dest<strong>in</strong>ation development. Due to the diverse nature, and<br />
quantity <strong>of</strong>, different niche products at a dest<strong>in</strong>ational level no-one can <strong>of</strong>fer contributions across all aspects <strong>of</strong> niche tourism. <strong>The</strong><br />
significance <strong>of</strong> my research however, is that it <strong>of</strong>fers contributions along the various stages <strong>of</strong> the life-cycle.<br />
This body <strong>of</strong> work has also helped to <strong>in</strong>form tourism practice. <strong>The</strong> key f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs are important as they provide a critical <strong>in</strong>sight <strong>in</strong>to<br />
niche tourist pr<strong>of</strong>iles; travel preferences and behaviour and the economic value and contribution <strong>of</strong> key niche tourism market<br />
segments. This <strong>in</strong>formation is a valuable market<strong>in</strong>g tool for tourism operators and dest<strong>in</strong>ation marketers when strategis<strong>in</strong>g
