Recommendations for Reading this Thesis<br />

For a complete reading we recommend reading in the natural sequential order. For<br />

application <strong>of</strong> the method we recommend to read successively Chapters 1,4,5 and 6,<br />

Sections 7.2,8.2, 8.3,9.2 and 9.3, and Chapters 11 and 12.<br />

For specific scientific interest there are in principle separate topics in this thesis:<br />

Background <strong>of</strong> the design <strong>of</strong> the method, Chapters 1,2,3,4,5,6 and 7.<br />

Research overview <strong>of</strong> related work, Chapter 2.<br />

Object-oriented concepts, Chapters 4 and 6.<br />

Architecture and structure design, Chapter 5.<br />

Communication, concurrency and distribution, Chapter 6.<br />

Design <strong>of</strong> a formal language and semantics: Chapter 7,8 and 9.<br />

Justification<br />

The responsibilities for the material in this thesis are as follows:<br />

P.H.A. van der Putten is responsible for Chapters 3,4,5,6 and 11.<br />

J.P.M. Voeten is responsible for Chapters 7,8,9 and 10 and Appendices A, B and C.<br />

The other material has been created in a joint effort.
