PESIA Weg naar Zee 2D Seismic 2012 4.4 THE HUMAN ENVIRONMENT 4.4.1 ARCHAEOLOGY AND HISTORY In northern Suriname pre-Columbian settlements have been found on sand ridges and on artificial mounds in swamp areas (Versteeg, 2003). Associated with these settlements often raised fields have been established for agriculture. Tingi holo archaeological site. Raised fields are predominantly known from eastern and western Suriname, with only small areas in central Suriname. No artificial mounds or raised fields are known from central Suriname, where the study area is located. Figure 9 and table 8 show the currently known archaeological sites in the Weg naar Zee area 54

PESIA Weg naar Zee 2D Seismic 2012 Figure 9 Archaeological sites in the Weg naar Zee area (Versteeg, 2003) The Weg naar Zee area has been dominated by the Kwatta Culture (ca. 600-1250 1250 AD). People of this culture lived in villages on ridges in central Suriname. Apart from that a few sites of the Koriabo Culture (ca. 1250-1650 1650 AD) have been found. Traces of this culture are found throughout Suriname except cept for West Suriname. They practiced shifting cultivation. Given the ecological conditions in parts of the project area, it is possible that more pre pre- pre Columbian settlements on ridges are present here as well. Suitable conditions require the presence of a creek, close to a river or the sea and higher terrain. Ridges have frequently been used for settlements, in particular shell ridges. However, the area around Paramaribo has been intensively used and it is unlikely that more archeological sites are encounte encountered encounte within the cultivated part of the study area. No new sites have been discovered recently recently.
