could do to streng<strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong>m.” 41 Besides, Kutuzov told Barclay and Bagration to proceed<br />

freely; so <strong>the</strong>y were able to seize initiative in combat, but <strong>the</strong>y did not change <strong>the</strong>ir low<br />

opinion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> aged Kutuzov as a tactical commander. 42<br />

The strength <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Russian <strong>army</strong> is still a matter <strong>of</strong> controversy, with numbers<br />

varying from 120,000 to 135,000 men. 43 But recent research proved that by 7 September<br />

<strong>the</strong> Russians had 154,634 soldiers, <strong>of</strong> whom 115,134 men were regular troops, 44 and 640<br />

Notwithstanding <strong>the</strong> facts, Soviet scholars followed <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficial indoctrination and<br />

attempted to depict Kutuzov as a great strategist, who anticipated Napoleon’s every movement<br />

and reacted accordingly. Zhilin justified Kutuzov’s decisions and stated that Kutuzov actively<br />

took part in <strong>the</strong> battle. Beskrovny praised Kutuzov’s strategy and called him “strategist <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

world significance”, while Garnich claims Kutuzov had a “precisely elaborated plan” and<br />

understood Napoleon’s designs on attacking left flank, but “did not consider it necessary to make<br />

Bagration’s 2 nd Western <strong>army</strong> enlisted 39,761 soldiers. By <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> August, <strong>the</strong> 2 nd Western<br />

Army amounted to 34,925 men. On 31 August it was reinforced with 4976 men, but lost some<br />
