Suvorov wrote Paul, “Prince Bagration is one of the best [naiotlichneishii] generals in many aspects, who deserves to receive the highest awards.” 217 As a sign of Suvorov’s trust, Bagration was always appointed to the advance guard and distinguished himself in numerous clashes, including at Lecco and Marengo. He demonstrated his sharp eye for tactics, a reserved character and presence of mind in the heat of action. He cared for his troops and on one occasion, stopped a food supply train to provide his starving troops. As a result, he earned respect of his soldiers and a reputation as a taciturn and tough fighter.
