The instrument measures phase difference between two sinusoidal voltages; phase angles are read from a two- degree, step control with vernier indicator having a precision of 0.01 °. Built -in sensing provides direct reading of proper quadrant. Accuracy is independent of even harmonics and of third harmonics up to 1 %. Input -level range is from 0.5 to 10 volts rms. Also, the Pentron pole piece has somewhat less curvature than that of the original part, which results in slightly higher flutter, but other than this the performance of the two units seems nearly identical. Half track heads are less critical regarding alignment than the full width units, but when playing tapes made on home equipment it is wise to have a screwdriver handy so that tape alignment may be made by ear. Also, be sure that you insert the half track pole piece in the right direction, or you will hear the wrong side of the tape going backwards. If you need the machine to play -back single track tapes it will work well on tapes recorded on Magnecord, Ampex, Presto, and those that utilize the full width of the tape, though with a 6 db loss of level, but is not recommended for play -back of tapes made on machines that just record a slot down the middle. Amplifier Design (Continued from page 109) Tests proved that the desired output of 30 -35 kw peak, on two - tone tests, could be obtained. At this peak power output, distortion products were measured using the monitor circuits of the LD -T2 as test facilities. Fig. 3 shows results of a series of typical distortion measurements. Hum and other distortion products not shown in Fig. 3 were 20 -30 db below the values for 3rd order products. Further improvements in the r -f grounding of the input circuits reduced the 3rd order distortion products still further. The design objective for the transmitter- linear amplifier combination was 3rd order distortion 35 db down at full rated output; improving db for db down to 5 db below rated output; and staying below 40 db at lower levels of output for frequencies below 23 MC.
