local station from a remote point
over two balanced pairs of telephone
type cable and a ground
return. The local control unit serves
two primary functions: It transmits
D/F intelligence to the remote
stations and it exercises complete
control of the local station upon
the receipt of the proper electrical
commands from the remote point.
For remote operation, the D/F
bearing voltage is amplified in the
local control unit by means of a
low distortion, high quality amplifier
and matched to one balanced
pair of the remote cable through
a repeat coil. In a similar manner,
one phase of the antenna reference
voltage is amplified and matched
to the second balanced pair of the
remote cable.
The control circuits in the local
control unit provides for system
on -off operation, target transmitter
operation, and channel selection on
both the receiver and transmitter
by means of a number of current
sensitive and polarized relays.
Several direct current possibilities
are made available to the coils of
one or more of these relays through
contact arrangement and manual
circuit selection at any one of the
remote stations. The current possibilities
are zero and various
degrees of positive and negative
currents. Phantom circuits are used
to transmit the control currents
over the same conductors used for
the D/F and reference signals.
The matched pair carrying the
D/F signal serves as one leg of
the circuit and the matched pair
carrying the reference signal serves
as the other leg. The ground
circuit is used as the common connection.
A block diagram of the
remote station is shown in Fig. 7.
For single remote station operation,
the junction box shown in Fig. 7
is not required ; only the remote
control unit and the azimuth indicator
which is identical to the local
indicator are used.
The remote control unit receives
the bearing voltage arriving over
one of the balanced pairs and
matches it to the phase meter
circuits in the indicator at the
proper level. In addition, the D/F
signal is also amplified and fed to a
loud speaker in the indicator for
monitoring purposes. The single
