guard against this mistake.<br />

10. I am therefore in favour of continuing our present<br />

plan on the chance of getting a success in the north, not<br />

only because of the military situation but also because of<br />

the necessity of trying to improve the air and sea situation,<br />

and I am consequently averse from diverting any of our<br />

resources to Italy. We should, however, do all we can to<br />

provide Italy with means for increasing her ammunition<br />

supply, as she already has far more guns than she can keep<br />

employed, and in this connection I would remind the War<br />

Cabinet that there is no reason why Italy should remain<br />

inactive throughout the winter, as operations can continue<br />

on the Isonzo up to the end of January.<br />
