Toledo Brownfields Group<br />

Early 1990s-Present<br />

Description:<br />

The Toledo Brownfields Group began in the early 1990s as the Mayor’s<br />

Environmental Advisory Board. In 1998, the City of Toledo received a $200,000 US<br />

EPA grant to conduct environmental site assessments. With this grant, they have<br />

updated the Brownfield Site Inventory, solicited community input and involvement,<br />

highlighted marketable brownfield properties, and sought funding to sustain and<br />

promote brownfield redevelopment.<br />

The Toledo Brownfields Group has identified the City’s top sites <strong>for</strong> redevelopment,<br />

ranked <strong>for</strong> market value, public health, or neighborhood importance. Eighteen sites<br />

have been designated as high priority <strong>for</strong> redevelopment support. The first five are<br />

the sites the City plans to dedicate US EPA pilot assessment funds toward. The City<br />

and the Brownfields Group plan to monitor the progress of the remaining sites and, if<br />

requested, the Group will provide technical advice and investigate financing options<br />

<strong>for</strong> a prospective developer.<br />

Maumee Bay Bacteria Task Force<br />

1997 - Present<br />

Due to high levels of E. coli bacteria at Maumee Bay State Park, the Maumee Bay<br />

Task Force was <strong>for</strong>med. Their goal was to determine the cause of the bacteria<br />

contamination and develop a solution. The task <strong>for</strong>ce has supported several grants<br />

by the University of Toledo to determine the source bacterial loadings. They have<br />

also encouraged other organization to assist in these ef<strong>for</strong>ts.<br />

Ottawa River Remediation Team<br />

1998 - Present<br />

Description:<br />

The Ottawa River Remediation Team (ORR-Team) was <strong>for</strong>med in early 1998 at the<br />

request of the Maumee RAP Ottawa River Action Group. The ORR-Team is a<br />

partnership of environmental professionals, including federal, state, and local<br />

governmental agencies, working to expedite the restoration of the beneficial uses<br />

through strategic watershed planning and coordination <strong>for</strong> the Ottawa River and<br />

western Lake Erie community in order to remediate this highly contaminated stream.<br />

Through the collaborative ef<strong>for</strong>ts of the team, a task and timeline table has been<br />
