11. INT. PADDINGTON GREEN POLICE STATION - OBSERVATION ROOM OUTSIDE THE CELL - NIGHT. RYAN watches through the glass. COLLETTE is reading the files. INT. GINGY’S HOUSE - SOUTH ARMAGH - BREAKFAST GINGY kisses his wife and four kids goodbye and heads for the door. Through the window, we see the side of his newly painted van. GINGY HUGHES PLUMBING. Night or day, call 0845 666734. INT. PADDINGTON GREEN POLICE STATION - CELL - DAY COLLETTE looks like she hasn’t moved. RYAN takes a seat. A beat. RYAN Collette, my name is David Jenkins. I’m here because we believe your brother Gerry is determined to kill of this peace process before its even begun. We need to read him...to know what he’s thinking. If you agree to help us, you walk out of here and go home to your kids, like nothing ever happened. COLLETTE Leave me alone, please. RYAN Two weeks after your boyfriend was gunned down, we got a tipoff. Gerry told one of his adjutants you were hurt and angry enough to think about getting your hands dirty. He said he needed you for something. I got on a plane to Belfast the next day and I’ve watched you ever since. I know it bugs the hell out of you that your mother won’t get the washing machine fixed. I know you worry about Mark’s behavior in the playground. I know Paddy’s heart isn’t really in the struggle any more, even if he’d rather die than admit it. And I know you’re so lonely that, on the night before you left Belfast, you slept with a guy you don’t even like.
12. She looks furious. RYAN (CONT’D) He took you back to his place and fucked you so roughly that-- COLLETTE (on her feet, pushing the table back) For Christ’s sake... RYAN (on his feet also) You went home, took the children into your bed and cried until it was time to go. COLLETTE Leave me alone! (She sits again). Jesus... RYAN It’ll break their hearts. COLLETTE I want a lawyer. He takes a video tape from the briefcase, slaps it into the machine, bangs it shut and presses play. We see a grainy undercover shot of COLLETTE and her little boy walking home from school. She PULLS him closer and wraps an arm around his shoulder. Despite herself, COLLETTE’S eyes are DRAWN TO THE SCREEN. There’s an edit point and now we see her with CATHERINE on her lap in the garden. Another edit and she is kneeling on the ground by the back gate with MARK. The audio has been boosted. How long? MARK COLLETTE Just for a few days, then-- MARK That’s what Dad said and he’s never coming-- COLLETTE smashes the VHS recorder from the desk. She slams the chair into the wall and sinks back into the corner. RYAN comes around to her, squats down. RYAN It doesn’t have to be like this.
