21. RYAN (CONT’D) (deliberately businesslike once more) I’ll see you in two days... INT. THE FRONT SEAT OF GINGY’S CAR - NIGHT GINGY HUGHES is spinning down the road to that pavilion again, but he’s not pleased about it. He parks ups and bristles as he marches inside. INT. THE PAVILION - SOUTH ARMAGH - CONTINUOUS. It sure is dark in here, but nothing assuages GINGY’s anger. GINGY I told you not to use that-- A torch-light flicks on. It illuminates the ghoulish face of KEVIN MULGREW, the IRA’s new head of Internal Security. MULGREW. Good evening, Gingy. You’se expecting someone else? GINGY (stunned) No...no. GINGY turns to run, but it’s too late. MULGREW’S men have the place surrounded. INT. MI5 HEADQUARTERS - THE CHIEF’S OFFICE - NIGHT RYAN stands in the centre of the room. His boss ALAN BUCHANAN looks down upon the dark waters of the Thames. He moves behind his desk and pours two tumblers of whisky. He hands one to RYAN and they touch glasses. BUCHANAN Congratulations. RYAN Thank you, sir. BUCHANAN The trap was well set. You travel in the morning? Yes. RYAN RYAN waits. He didn’t get asked up here for a pat on the back.
22. BUCHANAN You’re not going to like this, but I’ve had to cut the RUC in on this one. RYAN is dumbfounded. BUCHANAN (CONT’D) It’s a fifty-fifty split. They’ve assigned a good man; Detective Inspector Brian Allen. RYAN (tense) Why? BUCHANAN (tetchy) Because we have to deal with the local cops just as the FBI does in Montana or Idaho or Florida. We can’t act as if we’re fighting a different war. And, right now, they’re getting nervous. RYAN About what? BUCHANAN Oh, for God’s sake David, don’t be obtuse. About what this peace process means for them...are we selling them out, are we telling them everything. They want any in on Gerry McVeigh they can get. They guessed we were having a tilt at his sister and they went above my head. RYAN (furious) She’ll never accept it. BUCHANAN Then you’d better bloody make her!
