39. Fine. MARK He thinks about it. COLLETTE What was the best bit of the day? MARK When you came to pick me up. COLLETTE pulls him tighter. INT. COLLETTE’S HOME - A FEW MINUTES LATER. COLLETTE comes through the door and throws her keys in the pot. Her mother is cooking the kids dinner, but she’s tense. MA. You have a visitor. COLLETTE frowns at her mother’s demeanor and tone. She walks through to... EXT. COLLETTE’S BACK YARD - CONTINUOUS. ...where a man is sitting with his back to her, bouncing CATHERINE upon his lap. He turns. It is KEVIN MULGREW. MULGREW. Collette; what about you’se? COLLETTE tries to conceal her fear. COLLETTE Hello, Kevin. MULGREW. That’s a beautiful little girl you have here... CATHERINE doesn’t look too sure. COLLETTE scoops her up. MULGREW stands. COLLETTE I have to give the kids tea. MULGREW. A Volunteer is never off duty Collette. COLLETTE Neither is a mother. He smiles. It’s a repellent gesture. He picks up his coat.
40. MULGREW. We need to talk about London. But only when you’re ready, Collette. She stares at him, unsure of how she is expected to respond. PADDY arrives through the back gate. We sense immediately that he cannot abide this man. PADDY What the hell’s he doing here? COLLETTE It’s all right, Paddy. He’s just leaving. MULGREW. I’m doing my job, Volunteer McVeigh. PADDY Then fuck off and do it somewhere else. MULGREW looks irritated. MULGREW. (to Collette, terse) We’ll talk. He leaves. PADDY takes his sister’s arm. PADDY What did he want? COLLETTE It’s about London. PADDY What’s the problem? COLLETTE I don’t know. PADDY thinks about this a moment and then we FOLLOW as he ducks back through the gate to the alley. PADDY’s P.O.V. as he stalks down the narrow lane to where his brother GERRY is standing in open ground. GERRY is talking to his wife CHRISTY, a slim and attractive brunette. His seven-year-old son LIAM stands patiently by his side. He’s a kid always looking for his Dad’s attention but rarely getting it. CHRISTY shoots her brother-in-law a long-suffering -- maybe even barbed -- grin and melts away. When they are out of earshot;
