81. RYAN It can’t be Gerry. ALLEN It could be anyone. Paddy. RYAN ALLEN doesn’t react. RYAN (CONT’D) That’s why you guys demanded to be cut in on the deal. Trevor Long thinks your man is more important than Collette. If Mulgrew gets too close, she’ll be thrown to the wolves to protect him. ALLEN is grim-faced now. ALLEN I’ve known worse outcomes. Three weeks later, Jim heard an explosion outside his house and came out to find Joe bleeding to death on his drive. He’d been trying to plant a bomb under Jim’s car. ALLEN draws on his cigar. A beat. ALLEN (CONT’D) Of course, Joe’s pals in the IRA had scarpered: they were real brave fellas’. So it was down to Jim to cradle his old friend as he lay dying. ALLEN (CONT’D) It’s a war, David. And our job is to protect those who have decided not to debase themselves. You of all people should understand that. RYAN Even you can’t believe it’s that simple. ALLEN You don’t think so? Have you followed her to the grave of the boss she murdered? RYAN Yes. And to Milltown, where she buried the little brother we gunned down in the street. ALLEN What about her boyfriend? Have you seen her putting flowers by his headstone? RYAN shakes his head. ALLEN (CONT’D) That’s because he was a filthy little bastard, who used to like to give her a slap.
