33. RYAN David Ryan. We follow them to ALLEN’s beaten up saloon. INT. COLLETTE’S HOME - LAUNDRY ROOM - DAY COLLETTE is in the tiny utility room behind the kitchen, bent over the washing machine, which isn’t working. She puzzles over what’s wrong, punches a few buttons and finally gives the door a good KICK. It starts to work again. As she smiles to herself, it springs an alarming leak. COLLETTE Shit...Mam! MA comes in and now the two women fiddle with the dials. Eventually, MA switches it off at the wall and pushes the door shut hard enough to stem the leak. COLLETTE (CONT’D) You got Paddy to fix it again. Both women laugh. MA pushes back COLLETTE’s hair and kisses her forehead. INT. ALLEN’S CAR - ON THE ROAD INTO BELFAST - DAY. ALLEN Don’t tell me; they signed you up at Oxford? RYAN smiles. Not a lot he can say here. Allen glances at his watch. Ryan nods. ALLEN (CONT’D) Midday, Linenhall Street? ALLEN (CONT’D) Think she’ll show? Or was she just taking you for a ride? Ryan doesn’t answer. This guy is going to be a barrel of laughs... EXT. THE FALLS ROAD IN WEST BELFAST - DAY COLLETTE is taking MARK to school, an arm around his shoulder. They pass an army patrol routinely deployed to protect Catholics from Protestants and vice versa. In Catholic areas like this, they long ago became the ENEMY.
34. A soldier suddenly blocks her way. He’s an older guy with a rugged face, but he’s friendly. Or at least polite. SOLDIER (points) We need to check your bag, Ma’am. She lets him search it. There’s no point in a confrontation. SOLDIER (CONT’D) Your pockets. COLLETTE Sargeant, I’m just taking my son to school. But he’s not budging. She spreads her arms. SOLDIER Perhaps you’d be kind enough to step into the doorway here. COLLETTE frowns. But the guy is still being extremely polite, so she complies. SOLDIER (CONT’D) If you could put your arms against the wall. She shakes her head, but does so. The LONG RAINCOAT she is wearing is spread wide, like a bat’s wings. Or a screen... The soldier checks her raincoat pockets. He begins with her right wrist. The search is tight. It is slow. Too slow. No answer. Elbows. Shoulders. Arm-pits. Waist. Ribs. Slower still. COLLETTE I’m just taking my son to school, Sargeant. COLLETTE (CONT’D) Is this necessary?
