EXT. COLLETTE’S STREET - DAY
COLLETTE rounds the corner and slows to a walk. She passes
a group of kids playing football in the street and
struggles with her key in the lock. She hesitates for a
beat and then walks into...
INT. COLLETTE’S HOME - CONTINUOUS.
The house is quiet. COLLETTE’S MOTHER is hunched over the
stove. As she turns, the suffering of the years of war is
etched indelibly into her face. MA conducts herself with
unbearable dignity. They embrace.
COLLETTE’S P.O.V. through to...
EXT. BACK YARD - CONTINUOUS.
She stands in the doorway. Her five-year-old son MARK is
pushing his sister on a swing. His manner is aggressive and
testing; he’s a boy with issues. The little girl CATHERINE
catches sight of COLLETTE.
Mammy!
CATHERINE
She comes running. COLLETTE wraps her up tight as MARK
watches from behind the swing. COLLETTE pulls out a present
from her rucksack and CATHERINE unwraps it. It’s a doll.
They snuggle tighter.
COLLETTE gently places her daughter on the step and
approaches MARK.
COLLETTE
Hello, my love.
She hands him another parcel. He unwraps it suspiciously.
It’s a London double decker bus, which he examines for a
moment before hurling the toy at her head and fleeing
through a garden gate.
COLLETTE catches him down the ALLEY.
Go away!
MARK
She wrestles with him. After a few moments, he begins to
sob and clings to her.
He holds on like he’s never going to let go.
