79. GERRY (quieter) We need to talk. PADDY I know you like to think you’re the conscience of this war, Gerry. But you’re gonna end up fightin’ it all on your own... PADDY pushes back his chair and storms out. INT. ALLEN’S HOUSE - NIGHT CHRISTMAS EVE in the ALLEN household: a happy family scene. ALLEN has a bottle of port and a box of cigars in his hand and is squiring RYAN through to his study. As they go, ALLEN’S attractive blonde daughter shoots their guest an ADMIRING GLANCE. The pair sit in deep arm chairs in front of a roaring fire. ALLEN pours two glasses of port and offers the box of cigars. RYAN No thanks. ALLEN Come on. It’ll kill you quicker. ALLEN lights one for himself, sits back. ALLEN (CONT’D) Now you steer clear of her, d’ya hear? RYAN smiles. Like he’d dare. ALLEN (CONT’D) Bloody daughters. Nothing but trouble. They stare into the fire. ALLEN (CONT’D) You must be missing your family. (Shakes his head) Tough being away... RYAN Not really. ALLEN I’m sorry to hear that.
80. RYAN doesn’t answer. No point in talking about it. But for a moment, he seems lonely... ALLEN (CONT’D) Your old man was in the military? RYAN allows himself the shadow of a smile. BRIAN ALLEN is a smart enough cop to have done his research. ALLEN (CONT’D) He died over here. RYAN Don’t worry; they put me through the psych assessments. South Armagh. Some guy who got plugged by the army the following year. Nothing to do with what we’re working on. ALLEN stares into the fire. That wasn’t what he was getting at. ALLEN I can see you want to make sense of it. That’s only natural. RYAN Which source has the code 642? ALLEN shrugs, like he doesn’t know what RYAN is talking about. No answer. RYAN (CONT’D) I was asking myself what Barry Delavine was doing in the Chief’s office the other day; why would another agent handler be getting a slap on the back on the same day as us? RYAN (CONT’D) But then, it was obvious; another handler means another agent. Close enough to <strong>Shadow</strong> <strong>Dancer</strong> to know about the same operation. ALLEN Speculation.
