"Powertrain 2020 – The Future Drives Electric"
Electric motors are already a mass-market product with a wide range of
applications. They are produced by well-established manufacturers. However,
the requirements for electric motors for vehicles differ from those for
regular electric motors. In particular, electric motors for vehicles are subject
to greater weight and packaging restrictions, have higher efficiency needs
(due to the limited energy supply), superior power requirements and need
a broader speed range.
For industrial applications, the induction motor (or AC asynchronous motor
– see box feature) is by far the most common type of electric motor. This is
largely because of its simple design and low production costs. As compact
electronic inverters became available in the 1980s, engineers first started
using this type of motor in vehicles.
