AST 101 Astronomy I (Core)<br />

Co-requisite: AST 101 LAB<br />
This course studies the history of astronomy,<br />
the tools of the astronomer and the contents<br />
of the solar system: planets, moons, asteroids,<br />
meteoroids and comets. This course also<br />
includes laboratory experience.<br />
AST 102 Astronomy II (Core)<br />
4 Credits<br />
Co-requisite: AST 102 LAB<br />
This course studies the structure and life cycle<br />
of the sun, stars, galaxies and the universe as<br />
a whole, including cosmology and relativity.<br />
This course also includes laboratory experience.<br />

AUM 101 Basic Mechanics/Safety<br />
1 Credit<br />
This course introduces you to the Automotive<br />
Technology program held at the Warren Tech<br />
Auto Shop. It covers orientation, grading systems<br />
and shop safety. It is a required course if<br />
you are new to the Automotive Technology<br />
program, and is a prerequisite for any of the<br />
other courses within the program.<br />
AUM 102 Brakes I<br />
2 Credits<br />
Prerequisite: AUM 101<br />
This course covers basic terminology, theory<br />
of operation and service of drum and disc<br />
brakes, including lathe operation. Knowledge<br />
and skill improvements are measured by<br />
manipulative and written assessments.<br />
AUM 103 Brakes II<br />
3 Credits<br />
Prerequisite: AUM 102<br />
This course covers complete trouble-shooting<br />
and service of automotive braking systems,<br />
including drum and disc brakes, complete<br />
overhaul and ABS systems. Knowledge and<br />
skill improvements are measured by manipulative<br />
and written assessments.<br />
AUM 104 Suspension I<br />
2 Credits<br />
Prerequisite: AUM 101<br />
This course covers the theory and operation<br />
of the various automotive suspension systems.<br />
Identification, terminology and simple repairs<br />
are studied. Skills are evidenced by practical<br />
application and unit tests. Knowledge and<br />
skill improvements are measured by manipulative<br />
and written assessments.<br />
AUM 105 Suspension II<br />
3 Credits<br />
Prerequisite: AUM 104<br />
This course offers training on how to diagnose<br />
suspension problems, make repairs and<br />
use special tools related to suspension work.<br />
Knowledge and skill improvements are measured<br />
by manipulative and written assessments.<br />
AUM 106 Alignment I<br />
3 Credits<br />
Prerequisite: AUM 101<br />
This course introduces you to the principles<br />
of wheel alignment, tire and wheel service,<br />
and wheel balancing. Required adjustments,<br />
theory and necessary repairs are included.<br />
Knowledge and skill improvements are measured<br />
by manipulative and written assessments.<br />
AUM 107 Alignment II<br />
1 Credit<br />
Prerequisite: AUM 106<br />
This course enables you to use 4-wheel alignment<br />
equipment, make necessary repairs and<br />
adjustments to a vehicle and restore it to factory<br />
alignment specifications. Knowledge and<br />
skill improvements are measured by manipulative<br />
and written assessments.<br />
AUM 108 Heating and A/C II<br />
7 Credits<br />
Prerequisites: AUM 101 and 128<br />
This course studies the theory of operation<br />
and defines related terms. It identifies various<br />
components and matches them to their function<br />
and identifies special tools and equipment.<br />
Students will be able to recover refrigerant<br />
and repair, evacuate, recharge and leak<br />
check an automotive air conditioning system.<br />
Completion of the federally required certification<br />
test is covered as well. Knowledge and<br />
skill improvements are measured by manipulative<br />
and written assessments.<br />
AUM 109 Manual Drive Train I<br />
3 Credits<br />
Prerequisite:AUM 101<br />
This course covers the theory and operation<br />
of drive shafts, CV joints, clutches and manual<br />
transmission servicing. Students will diagnose,<br />
remove, repair drive shafts and FWD<br />
drive axles. Terminology of associated parts,<br />
clutch servicing (on car) and basic services<br />
(on car) are also studied. Knowledge and skill<br />
improvements are measured by manipulative<br />
and written assessments.<br />
AUM 110 Manual Drive Train II<br />
6 Credits<br />
Prerequisite: AUM 109<br />
This course studies the theory and operation<br />
of manual transmissions, transfer cases and<br />
differentials. Emphasis on diagnosis, removal<br />
and repair of clutches, transmissions, differentials<br />
and transfer cases are emphasized.<br />
Special tools, tool usage and lifting equipment<br />
are also covered. Knowledge and skill<br />
improvements are measured by manipulative<br />
and written assessments.<br />
AUM 114 Automatic Transmission I<br />
3 Credits<br />
Prerequisite: AUM 101<br />
This course covers the theory of operation,<br />
terminology, diagnosis and testing of automatic<br />
transmissions. On-car repairs, pressure<br />
testing and servicing are covered, as well.<br />
Knowledge and skill improvements are measured<br />
by manipulative and written assessments.<br />
AUM 115 Automatic Transmission II<br />
4 Credits<br />
Prerequisite: AUM 114<br />
This course is intended to train students in the<br />
techniques used in the rebuilding of automatic<br />
transmissions. Use of service manuals is<br />
stressed in returning transmissions to serviceable<br />
condition. Knowledge and skill improvements<br />
are measured by manipulative and<br />
written assessments.<br />
AUM 118 Tune-Up I<br />
3 Credits<br />
Prerequisite: AUM 101<br />
This course identifies the components, their<br />
operation and terminology related to automotive<br />
engine tune-up. Theory of 4-stroke<br />
engines, principles of magnetism, spark timing,<br />
and related tools and test equipment are<br />
covered. You will use test equipment to make<br />
adjustments and return engine settings to<br />
manufacturer specifications. Knowledge and<br />
skill improvements are measured by manipulative<br />
and written assessments.<br />
