<strong>Red</strong> <strong>Rocks</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong> provides four possible alternatives for<br />
students desiring training in the early childhood education field.<br />
These alternatives are:<br />
Preschool Group Leader Certificate-minimum 16 credits<br />
Infant/Toddler Group Leader Certificate-minimum 16 credits<br />
Director’s Certificate-minimum 25 credits<br />
AGS Degree in Early Childhood Education-minimum 60 credits<br />
The AGS degree and certificates in early childhood education (ECE)<br />
at <strong>Red</strong> <strong>Rocks</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong> provide comprehensive training in<br />
both the underlying theories of early childhood education and application<br />
of quality practices in early childhood care and learning environments.<br />
The program reflects an emphasis on:<br />
1) Practices that nourish and facilitate relationships between caregivers,<br />
children and families<br />
2) The concepts and applications of play-based, child centered, curriculum<br />
approaches<br />
3) Professional advocacy and participation in the organizations and<br />
early childhood issues in Colorado<br />
Designed to meet the needs of students currently working in the field,<br />
ECE classes are offered nights, weekends, and Monday afternoons.<br />
<strong>Red</strong> <strong>Rocks</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong> offers core classes for the AGS<br />
degree during the day, evenings or weekends. Self-paced and online<br />
<strong>options</strong> are available for many courses. Please contact the Early<br />
Childhood Education Program coordinator for advising before or<br />
soon after enrollment. Some financial assistance may be available for<br />
indi- viduals already employed in the field.<br />
Certificate: Group Leader<br />
This program prepares graduates for group leader positions in early<br />
childhood care and education settings. A grade of C or better is<br />
required in all classes leading to a certificate or degree. Upon completion<br />
of these classes, students receive a Colorado Group Leader<br />
Certificate from <strong>Red</strong> <strong>Rocks</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong>.<br />
In addition to the academic requirements, the Colorado Department of<br />
Human Services requires nine months (1,302 hours) of work experience.<br />
Group leaders must be at least 18 years old.<br />
All courses leading toward the Group Leader Certificate apply toward<br />
the requirements of the AGS degree with an emphasis in early childhood<br />
education.<br />
Successful (80%) development and completion of the capstone course<br />
portfolio is required for graduation. Any student not completing the<br />
capstone portfolio must complete a portfolio before approval for graduation.<br />
Program admission requirements:<br />
All students enrolling in the Group Leader Certification Program<br />
must meet the minimum assessment scores required by the college, or<br />
prerequisite required by the program.<br />
