Outdoor Education<br />

Degree: Associate of Arts with an Emphasis<br />

in Outdoor Physical Education<br />

The completion of the following recommended course of study is appropriate<br />

if you intend to transfer to the University of Northern Colorado to<br />

complete a bachelor’s degree in physical education with an emphasis in<br />

outdoor education, or to prepare yourself to apply to the Professional<br />

Teacher Education Program (PTEP). Please consult with your academic<br />

advisor and the outdoor physical education faculty advisor<br />

(303.914.6238) before beginning this program.<br />

The associate of arts degree with an emphasis in outdoor physical education<br />

is also designed as a stand-alone program to allow the student to<br />

enter a career as an outdoor educator, wilderness guide, or to work in the<br />

outdoor retail industry.<br />

Certificate: Ski Area Safety<br />

This program will prepare students for work in the ski industry. Students<br />

will train for work in all traditional areas of safety as it relates to ski<br />

areas, such as working as a ski patroller or ski instructor, lift operator,<br />

retail/rental shop, trail-setter, trail construction, in-area hospitality guide,<br />

backcountry guide, and other jobs pertaining to client safety.<br />

Certificate: Colorado River Guide<br />

This program of study and experience will prepare the student to qualify<br />

as a professional river guide in the state of Colorado. Students will train<br />

to work in the whitewater rafting industry by meeting the qualifications<br />

as required by Colorado Statute 33-32-105.5 for professional river<br />

guides. In addition to the minimum qualifications, students will also prepare<br />

to be future trip leaders by completing this certificate program,<br />

which includes course work in outdoor recreation leadership, geology,<br />

wilderness ethics, and outdoor emergency care.<br />
