PED 152 Avalanche Safety I<br />

1 Credit<br />

This course emphasizes the latest information<br />

available about the study of avalanches, snow<br />

science, rescue equipment and rescue techniques.<br />

This course will provide students with<br />

the knowledge and skills necessary to help<br />

instill good judgement and sound skills when<br />

making day-to-day travel decisions in the<br />

winter environment. This course fulfills the<br />

National Ski Patrol’s Basic (Level I)<br />

Avalanche requirements.<br />

PED 153 Hiking<br />

1 Credit<br />

This course provides wilderness sites and<br />

their specific location in Colorado where one<br />

can go to hike or camp.The course includes<br />

selected wilderness sites in other western<br />

states.Information is included about how to<br />

use guide books and selected maps. Field<br />

days are spent hiking.<br />

PED 154 Backpacking<br />

3 Credits<br />

This course emphasizes the fundamentals of<br />

backpacking. The course includes trip planning,<br />

the selection of proper clothing and<br />

equipment, backpack cooking and nutrition,<br />

“Leave No Trace” hiking and camping,<br />

wilderness route finding, environmental hazards<br />

and safety procedures. The course<br />

includes field days and an overnight backpacking<br />

trip.<br />

PED 155 Outdoor Expedition<br />

3 Credits<br />

This course is a group expedition covering<br />

seven to 10 days backpacking, hiking, paddling,<br />

or climbing in remote North American<br />

regions.The course includes the rationale for<br />

organizing and conducting wilderness trips.<br />

PED 157 Basic Mountaineering<br />

3 Credits<br />

This course emphasizes the fundamentals of<br />

mountaineering on terrain that may include<br />

rock, snow and ice. Belaying, rappelling, ice<br />

axe techniques, proper clothing and equipment,<br />

backcountry weather forecasting and<br />

safe route finding will be presented. The<br />

course includes field trips and a peak attempt.<br />

PED 156 Snow and Glacier Climbing<br />

3 Credits<br />

This course emphasizes the use of ice axe,<br />

crampons and roped climbing on snow.The<br />

course includes route finding and crevasse<br />

rescue.<br />

PED 162 Map and Compass for the<br />

Outdoors Person<br />

3Credits<br />

This course covers reading highway, forest<br />

service and topographic maps that include<br />

symbols, legends, border information and<br />

contour lines.The course includes the usage<br />

of a magnetic compass in an outdoor environment<br />

and functions that plot a course on<br />

maps.Supplemental navigational skills are<br />

included.<br />

PED 159 Colorado’s Fourteeners<br />

This course presents an historical look into<br />

the naming and climbing of Colorado’s<br />

14,000-foot mountain peaks.The course<br />

includes information on the current routes to<br />

ascend the peaks.<br />

PED 161 Backcountry Cooking<br />

1Credit<br />

This course covers menu planning and nutritional<br />

requirements for wilderness<br />

camping.The course includes cooking a<br />

backpack meal.<br />

PED 163 Orienteering/Route finding<br />

3Credits<br />

This course combines the topics of using different<br />

types of topographic maps and compasses<br />

in order to safely plan a route in the<br />

wilderness with Orienteering (organized competitive<br />

cross-country walk/run using map and<br />

compass with a specific list of rules and map<br />

clues). Field trips may include student participation<br />

in a scheduled Orienteering meet.<br />

PED 165 Wilderness Survival Skills<br />

3Credits<br />

This course emphasizes the physiological and<br />

psychological principles of survival. Survival<br />

equipment, wilderness improvising techniques<br />

and wilderness dangers are included.<br />

PED 167 Basic Search and Rescue<br />

3Credits<br />

This course covers the basic fundamentals<br />

required for basic search and rescue in a<br />

wilderness environment.The course includes<br />

tracking techniques and field trips.<br />

PED 176 Introduction to Flyfishing<br />

1Credit<br />

In this course the student will gain knowledge<br />

and skill of the fine art of flyfishing including<br />

the selection and use of appropriate equipment,<br />

casting techniques, flyfishing entomology,<br />

and guiding techniques. This course<br />

includes several field trips to local flyfishing<br />

areas.<br />

PED 177 Basic Sailing<br />

1 Credit<br />

This course focuses on relaxation, stress management<br />

and wellness through a variety of<br />

physical and mental activities.<br />

PED 178 Scuba Diving<br />

This course offers basic instruction and skills<br />

in scuba diving. Individuals taking this course<br />

are required to provide their own scuba equipment<br />

or rent equipment.<br />

PED 181 Bicycle Camping<br />

2Credits<br />

This course covers the fundamentals of using<br />

the bicycle for camping recreation and<br />

includes equipment, clothing, repair procedures<br />

and camping techniques.<br />

PED 185 Nordic Skiing<br />

2Credits<br />

The classroom portion of this six-week course<br />

includes proper selection and care of equipment,<br />

types of skis and boot binding systems,<br />

the art and science of cross country ski waxing,<br />

appropriate clothing and safe route selection.<br />

Field sessions include skill building and<br />

ski techniques for cross-country skiing in the<br />

backcountry.<br />

PED 186 Snowshoeing<br />

This course emphasizes basic skills, equipment,<br />

clothing and techniques of snowshoeing.The<br />

course includes the objective dangers<br />

involved with winter recreation.<br />

This course is designed to improve cardiovascular<br />

fitness and strength. This course provides<br />

students with the opportunity to create<br />

an advanced workout routine and nutrition<br />

PED 211 Fitness and<br />

Conditioning IV<br />

1 Credit<br />

Prerequisites: PED 210<br />

Thiscourse offers students the opportunity to<br />

continue advancing in their physical fitness program.<br />

Advanced weight training, weight management<br />

and aerobic techniques are offered in<br />

conjunction with improved nutrition and dietary<br />

analysis.<br />
