EMS 130 Emergency Medical<br />
Techinician-Basic Intravenous (IV)<br />
Therapy<br />
2 credits<br />
Prerequisite: Instructor permission required<br />
This course is designed for the EMT-B to<br />
upgrade her/his skills. Students will spend<br />
time in the classroom gaining the knowledge<br />
and skill needed to safely and efficiently initiate<br />
an IV line in the pre-hospital setting. The<br />
clinical portion of the course provides students<br />
with the opportunity to initiate IV’s on<br />
actual patients. Upon successful completion<br />
of the, course students are eligible to be IV<br />
certified.<br />
EMS 131 Basic Trauma Life Support<br />
1 credit<br />
Prerequisite: Instructor permission required<br />
This course is designed for Emergency<br />
Medical Services’ personnel, and covers all<br />
the skills necessary for rapid assessment,<br />
resuscitation, ad stabilization and transportation<br />
of the trauma patient. This course was<br />
developed by Basic Trauma life support<br />
International and endorsed by the American<br />
<strong>College</strong> of Emergency Physicians and the<br />
National Association of EMS Physicians.<br />
EMS 134 Basic Electrocardiogram<br />
(EKG) Interpretation for EMS<br />
Provider<br />
2 credits<br />
This course assists the emergency medical<br />
technician in acquiring the knowledge and<br />
skills essential for identification of basic cardiac<br />
arrythmias especially those that are life<br />
threatening. The course is specifically<br />
designed for the pre-hospital worker. students<br />
learn to interpret both static and dynamic<br />
EKG tracings.<br />
EMS 225 Paramedicine (Emergency<br />
Medical Technician - Paramedic)<br />
14 credits<br />
Prerequisite: Instructor permission required<br />
This course is presented by both Centura St.<br />
Anthony’s Hospital Institute of Emergency<br />
Medical Services and the Colorado<br />
Association of Paramedic Education<br />
(C.A.P.E.) programs. To apply for this program,<br />
students must successfully complete<br />
the EMT-B course and have approximately<br />
one year of EMT-B first responding experience.<br />
Students will learn advanced pre-hospital<br />
emergency care techniques in assessing,<br />
treating and choosing the proper mode of<br />
transportation for acutely injured or ill<br />
patients. Upon successful completion of this<br />
course, students will be eligible to take the<br />
Colorado State EMS paramedical certification<br />
exam.<br />
EMS 226 Paramedicine II<br />
(Emergency Medical Technician -<br />
Paramedic)<br />

Prerequisite EMS 237<br />
Continuation of Paramedicine I. Must have<br />
completed Paramedicine I to be eligible to<br />
enroll in this class.<br />
EMS 240 Advanced Cardiac Life<br />
Support (ACLS) for the Emergency<br />
Medical Service Provider<br />
1 credit<br />
Prerequisite: Instructor permission required<br />
This ACLS course is specifically designed for<br />
the Emergency Medical Services’ provider.<br />
The course meets all the AHA specifications<br />
for ACLS certification. Advanced life support<br />
techniques such as arrhythmia recognition,<br />
pharmacological intervention and airway<br />
management are covered. Students have the<br />
opportunity to be certified.<br />
EMS 241 Pediatric Advanced Life<br />
Support for the EMS Provider<br />
1 credit<br />
Prerequisite: Current CPR certification<br />
(American Heart Association Health Care<br />
Provider Course C)<br />
Proficiency in EKG interpretation<br />
This course is specifically designed for the<br />
Emergency Medical Service’s provider. The<br />
course meets all American Heart Association<br />
specifications for PALS certification. Pediatric<br />
advanced life support teaches students to recognize<br />
and treat problems associated with airway,<br />
breathing and circulatory emergencies.<br />
Students have the opportunity to become certified<br />
at the national level.<br />
EMS 279 Paramedicine III<br />
(Emergency Medical Technician -<br />
Paramedic)<br />
8 credits -<br />
Prerequisite EMS 237 and 238<br />
The clinical and internship phase of the paramedic<br />
program. Students will be able to<br />
observe and practice the skills learned in<br />
class. Clinical and internship rotations will be<br />
both in-hospital and with an EMS agency.<br />
ENG - ENGLISH<br />
Writing and reading assessment is required<br />
before or during registration. The results are<br />
used to advise students into courses in which<br />
they are prepared to succeed.<br />
ENG 030 Basic Writing Skills<br />
3 Credits<br />
In a writing context, this course focuses on<br />
the simple sentence with particular emphasis<br />
on correct personal pronoun usage and correct<br />
verb tense. Students will study the difference<br />
between fragments and sentences and the correct<br />
usage of both. Focus also will be on subject<br />
-verb agreement. Students will begin<br />
basic critical reading and thinking skills.<br />
ENG 031 Spelling and Vocabulary I<br />
1 Credit<br />
This course is designed for students who need<br />
to develop spelling and vocabulary skills. The<br />
course emphasizes spelling rules, phonics,<br />
dictionary skills and vocabulary development.<br />
ENG 060 Writing Fundamentals<br />
3 Credits<br />
Co-requisite: Recommended REA 060<br />
Foundations of Reading<br />
Prerequisites: ENG 030 or appropriate<br />
COMPASS score<br />
In a writing context, this course focuses on<br />
simple and compund sentence structures with<br />
particular emphasis on coordinate conjunctions<br />
and conjunctive adverbs. Students will<br />
write paragraphs emphasizing purpose, organization,<br />
topic sentences, and the use of<br />
details to support the topic sentence.<br />
Emphasis also will be placed on critical reading<br />
and thinking.<br />
ENG 061 Spelling and Vocabulary II<br />
1 Credit<br />
Prerequisites: ENG 031 or appropriate<br />
ASSET or COMPASS score<br />
This course is designed for students who need<br />
to review spelling rules and vocabulary. The<br />
course emphasizes understanding and applying<br />
spelling rules and vocabulary to common<br />
writing experiences. The course is meant to<br />
bring student’s vocabulary ability to college<br />
level.<br />
ENG 090 Basic Composition<br />
3 Credits<br />
This course will emphasize critical thinking<br />
as students explore writing for specific purposes<br />
and audiences. Students will focus on<br />
the essay format, including a thesis statement,<br />
and review the use of topic sentences in paragraphs<br />
and transition devices used to tie paragraphs<br />
together.<br />
