PAR 235 Park Ranger Skills Seminar<br />

1-2 Credits<br />

This is a skills seminar that presents necessary<br />

information regarding specialized training<br />

related to the park ranger field. Handling<br />

of livestock, fence design (building and<br />

rapair), vehicle driving, park maintenance,<br />

budgeting and planning and trail design construction<br />

and maintenance are some of the<br />

topics that may be covered. This is a hands-on<br />

course for the development and application of<br />

skills.<br />

PAR 255 Advanced Resource<br />

Interpretation<br />

3 Credits<br />

Prerequisite: PAR 205<br />

This is an advanced course in natural and cultural/historical<br />

resource interpretation and<br />

provides students with the skills to plan, prepare<br />

and present exciting and relevant interpretation<br />

programs for special visitors and situations<br />

using a variety of personal and nonpersonal<br />

techniques. Examples of the types of<br />

skills offered are: writing and design of site<br />

produced publications and exhibit labels, producing<br />

basic audio-visual programs; preparing<br />

and presenting special activities such as<br />

demonstrations, living history, story telling,<br />

costumed interpretation for the physically or<br />

mentally challenged, sensory impaired, elderly<br />

and international visitors are discussed. The<br />

sensitive handling of controversial/sensitive<br />

educational issues is also discussed.<br />

PAR 297 Park Ranger Internship<br />

1-3 Credits<br />

Prerequisite: PAR 102<br />

This course is designed to give students realistic<br />

work experience in the field. All work is<br />

supervised by park rangers currently<br />

employed by land management agencies at<br />

various levels of government. Supervisors<br />

ensure that your participation is in relevant<br />

field work and that your performance is to the<br />

standards expected of employees of the agencies<br />

in which the internship occurs.<br />

PED - PHYSICAL<br />

EDUCATION<br />

All the PED courses pertaining to mountainoriented<br />

recreation have one or more field<br />

trips.Most field trips are single-day trips<br />

scheduled on a weekend.Courses marked<br />

with overnight camping.<br />

PED 104 Volleyball<br />

1 Credit<br />

This hands-on course develops and/or<br />

enhances basic knowledge and skills for the<br />

game of volleyball. Emphasis is on practical<br />

skills and performance. Relevant concepts<br />

include proper technique, rules, etiquette, and<br />

equipment. Instructional practices and games<br />

will be conducted on-campus outdoors.<br />

PED 106 Racquetball<br />

1 Credit<br />

This course is designed for individuals with<br />

intermediate to advanced racquetball skills.<br />

Emphasis is on individual performance, practical<br />

skills and competition.<br />

PED 109 Tennis<br />

1 Credit<br />

This course covers the fundamental skills of<br />

forehand, backhand, serve and net volley.<br />

Scoring, rules and court etiquette are introduced<br />

in both the singles and doubles game.<br />

PED 110 Fitness Conditioning<br />

1 Credit<br />

This course to creates a basic exercise and<br />

nutrition program based on individual goals<br />

and ability. Workouts include circuit training<br />

with a variety of other <strong>options</strong> including<br />

weight training, Ricochet, cardiovascular<br />

equipment and aerobic-style classes.<br />

PED 111 Fitness Conditioning II<br />

1 Credit<br />

Prerequisite: PED 110<br />

This course is designed for individuals interested<br />

in continuing their workout program to<br />

their cardiovascular fitness and strength. Free<br />

- weight training is introduced in conjunction<br />

with a personalized fitness program.<br />

PED 113 Introduction to Flyfishing<br />

1Credit<br />

In this course the student will gain the knowledge<br />

and skill of the fine art of Flyfishing<br />

including the selection and use of appropriate<br />

equipment, casting techniques, flyfishing<br />

entomology, and guiding techniques. This<br />

course includes several field trips to local flyfishing<br />

areas.<br />

PED 116 Weight Training<br />

1 Credit<br />

This course provides a basic overview of<br />

weight training equipment and techniques for<br />

all levels of ability. This course is designed to<br />

improve one’s fitness level while developing<br />

skills and knowledge in all areas of fitness.<br />

PED 120 Fitness and Wellness<br />

1 Credit<br />

This course offers students a flexible way to<br />

improve their total fitness levels. Students<br />

have the freedom of using a variety of<br />

strength, aerobic and flexibility machines, as<br />

well as free-weights and aerobic classes.<br />

PED 128 Outdoor Emergency Care<br />

2Credits<br />

This comprehensive course will prepare the<br />

student without previous first aid training to<br />

handle emergency care problems seen at<br />

alpine and nordic ski areas. The knowledge<br />

and skills are orientated toward the wilderness<br />

extrications, and the special equipment ski<br />

patrollers need for emergency care and transportation<br />

in the outdoor environment. This is<br />

a National Ski Patrol course.<br />

PED 143 Beginning Tai Chai<br />

1Credit<br />

This course is designed to introduce Tai Chai<br />

as an expression of understanding of self-control,<br />

exercise and self-defense. The primary<br />

emphasis is to gain an understanding of the<br />

history (origin and changes) of Tai Chai, the<br />

movements and their names, application of<br />

movements and terminology.<br />

PED 147 Introduction to Yoga<br />

1Credit<br />

This course offers background information<br />

and guided instruction in yoga. Students practice<br />

yoga according to their individual fitness<br />

levels and abilities. Emphasis is placed on<br />

enhancing general health and well-being<br />

through the performance of yoga. Techniques<br />

such as yoga poses, breath work, flexibility,<br />

balance and relaxation exercises will be experienced.<br />

PED 150 Basic Rock Climbing*<br />

2Credits<br />

This eight-week course presents the basic<br />

concepts of rope handling, knots, climbing<br />

techniques, safety, belaying and top roping on<br />

climbs that are rated from 5.0 to 5.8. The<br />

course includes field trips to local climbing<br />

areas.<br />

PED 151 Intermediate Rock<br />

Climbing<br />

2Credits<br />

This eight-week course is designed for the<br />

climber wanting to learn more advanced techniques,<br />

such as protection placement, anchors,<br />

setting up safe top roping sessions and an<br />

introduction to safe lead climbing. The course<br />

includes field trips to local climbing areas.<br />
