CHP 226 Intravenous Therapy<br />

This course covers basic venipuncture techniques,<br />

factors involved in vein selection, psychological<br />

implications, and nursing measures.<br />

CHP 227 Communication Skills<br />

0.5 Credit<br />

Reacting to the demands of one’s environment,<br />

stressors, and frustrations can take a toll<br />

on self-worth and interactions with others.<br />

This class will assist the student to acquire<br />

essential skills in communication, conflict resolution,<br />

negotiation, and team building.<br />

CHP 230 Trauma Assessment and<br />

Intervention<br />

1 Credit<br />

This course presents the steps for a systematic<br />

assessment and intervention in traumatic<br />

emergencies. Each step is covered in detail<br />

with handouts, slides, classroom discussion<br />

and hands-on experience. This course is not<br />

for BTLS Certification.<br />

CHP 232 Caring for the Caregiver<br />

0.5 Credit<br />

This course explores the daily stresses of<br />

caregivers and provides methods to relieve<br />

stress and care for ourselves. The course also<br />

examines a variety of methods to assist in<br />

self-healing.<br />

CHP 235 Nutritional Therapy and<br />

Health<br />

0.5 Credit<br />

This course examines the nutritional alternatives<br />

to traditional medical therapies. The discussions<br />

focus on a more optimum level of<br />

health, using various nutritional techniques.<br />

Topics include food allergies and asthma, premenstrual<br />

syndrome, gastrointestinal disorders,<br />

blood sugar abnormalities, vitamins and<br />

minerals and the effect of drugs on nutritional<br />

status.<br />

CHP 238 Advanced<br />

Electrocardiogram Interpretation<br />

1 Credit<br />

This course presents the fundamental concepts<br />

of 12-lead ECG interpretation along<br />

with various advanced topics in electrocardiography,<br />

such as electrical axis determination;<br />

differentiation of wide beat tachycardias;<br />

comprehensive discussion of blocks (AV,<br />

hemi and bundle); pre- excitation syndrome;<br />

pacemakers and how they impact the ECG,<br />

and effects of injury, ischemia and infarction<br />

on the ECG.<br />

CHP 239 Intravenous Certification<br />

5 Credits<br />

This course covers venipuncture techniques,<br />

blood tubes, procedure for setting up and<br />

maintaining intravenous therapy, intravenous<br />

catheters, solutions, pumps, antibiotic therapy<br />

and legal/ethical ramifications. Designed for<br />

the licensed practical nurse IV certification,<br />

may be taken as an IV refresher for registered<br />

nurses.<br />

CHP 243 Teaching in<br />

<strong>Community</strong>/Home Health Nursing<br />

0.5 Credit<br />

Prerequisites: CHP 225 and 264 are<br />

recommended<br />

This course presents teaching theories, assessment<br />

of client and family’s learning needs;<br />

teaching modalities and practicum to exercise<br />

new skills. This course covers the new<br />

JACHO and case management requirements,<br />

discharge teaching and community<br />

resources.x<br />

CHP 245 Bridging to Hospice<br />

Nursing<br />

0.5 Credit<br />

This course introduces the philosophy and<br />

principles of hospice support for the terminally<br />

ill, their family and friends. The course<br />

explores hospice intervention, which offers<br />

<strong>opportunities</strong> for comfort through symptom<br />

control, support to the patient’s family and<br />

friends in decision making and coping with<br />

anticipatory grieving and death. This course<br />

also includes coverage of hospice in the<br />

home, as well as in-patient settings.<br />

CHP 247 Phlebotomy Certification<br />

0.5 Credit<br />

This comprehensive phlebotomy class covers<br />

OSHA regulations, various collection procedures<br />

and requirements for the numerous laboratory<br />

tests; phlebotomy, fingersticks and<br />

other collection techniques; problem solving;<br />

legal implications and other duties specifically<br />

associated with the health care industry, i.e.,<br />

home health care, physicians office, hospital,<br />

etc. This course provides phlebotomy certification,<br />

not I.V. certification.<br />

CHP 248 Conflict Resolution in the<br />

Workplace<br />

0.5 Credit<br />

Conflicts occur in all relationships at one time<br />

or another. They can be especially unpleasant<br />

in a work setting, when power issues are most<br />

prevalent. Effective conflict resolution results<br />

in productive solutions as well as an increase<br />

in professional and personal self-esteem and<br />

reduction in stress. Students will, learn and<br />

practice effective skills and techniques to<br />

resolve workplace conflicts.<br />

CHP 250 Home Health Nursing<br />

Skills Part I<br />

0.5 Credit<br />

This course is for nurses entering the home<br />

health field. The course presents the skills and<br />

functions that are necessary for quality care in<br />

home health nursing, including medications,<br />

laboratory work, emergencies and common<br />

health problems seen in the home.<br />

CHP 255 Spanish for Health Care—<br />

Level II<br />

1 Credit<br />

Prerequisite:CHP 209<br />

This language course is conversational. Verb<br />

tenses are reviewed, along with medical terminology.<br />

Students are given an opportunity<br />

to speak with native speakers one-on-one for<br />

increased proficiency.<br />

CHP 257 ACLS<br />

(Advanced Cardiac Life Support)<br />

2 Credits<br />

Prerequisite:BCLS certification is required as<br />

well as proficiency in EKG recognition<br />

This course presents the required material for<br />

ACLS completion. The course covers arrhythmias,<br />

medications, therapeutic modalities for<br />

life threatening arrhythmias, airway management<br />

and other treatment modalities used in<br />

cardiac and respiratory arrest. Each class<br />

includes case scenarios to give practical and<br />

hands on use of emergency equipment. This<br />

course is taught according to NEW ACLS<br />

standards.<br />

CHP 259 ACLS Recertification<br />

0.5 Credit<br />

This course is a recertification course for<br />

those of students with current ACLS cards.<br />

The course covers rhythm recognition, cardiac<br />

drugs, cardiac monitors and case-based<br />

scenarios.<br />

CHP 260 Bereavement Counseling<br />

0.5 Credit<br />

This course presents current principles of<br />

bereavement counseling, including identification<br />

of the normal grieving process and<br />

appropriate interventions. The course covers<br />

the use of feelings and experiences in assisting<br />

patients and/or families who are bereaved.<br />
