Timecode recording The unit can be referenced to SMPTE/EBU timecode. SMPTE timecode is applied to countries adopting the NTSC television system, while EBU timecode is applied to countries adopting the PAL/SECAM system. Selecting the recording mode Two methods are available for recording timecode. • Recording timecode together with audio simultaneously When recording audio and timecode while creating a new file: Use the [NEW FILE] mode. When recording audio and timecode to an existing file: Use the [INSERT] mode. Selecting source timecode Two timecode sources to be recorded are available. • Timecode generated by the internal timecode generator. • External timecode received from the TIME CODE INPUT connector. Timecode is recorded regardless of the track mode of audio file. Recording timecode does not consume the recording space of a disk. 5-2
ABS H M S F PGM Recording timecode generated by the internal timecode generator You can record timecode generated by the internal timecode generator together with audio simultaneously. This section describes settings and operations for timecode recording. See "Chapter 4: Audio recording/playback" for details about settings and operations for audio recording. Set the [FRAME RATE] switch appropriately according to timecode to be recorded. 2. Set the [TC GEN MODE] switch appropriately according to the situation. 24H RUN REC RUN FREE RUN EXT RUN Timecode starts from the current time of the internal clock of the unit. When recording timecode to a new file, the generator records timecode from the value which continues to the last timecode value of the previous audio file. You can also use this mode for restriping discontinuous timecode. Runs the internal generator by the free run mode, and records the current internal generator time as the start time. The external timecode value is recorded as the start time. Unlike timecode striped on an audio or video tape, timecode on a disk is not striped from the beginning to the end. Only the offset between the ABS time and timecode at the recording start point is recorded. Therefore, if you record a discontinuous timecode value in the middle, the unit cannot recognize it. Also, the user bit when timecode starts recording is valid throughout the timecode, so the unit cannot handle the user bit that changes in the middle. 3. Press the [TC RDY] key to arm the timecode track. The TC RDY indicator is lit while "TC RDY" is shown on the display. 4. After pressing the [SHIFT] key to make the SHIFT mode active, press the [CHASE/SETUP] key to enter the TC SETUP mode, then preset the internal timecode generator time if necessary. See page 5-6 for details about how to preset the internal timecode generator time. 5-3
