Commission is responsible for the adm<strong>in</strong>istration of the Upper Bermejo River and Grande de Tarija River<br />

Bas<strong>in</strong>s, <strong>in</strong> order to promote susta<strong>in</strong>able development <strong>in</strong> its area of <strong>in</strong>fluence, optimize its natural resources<br />

development, contribute to its socioeconomic development, and allow rational and equitable management<br />

of water resources.<br />

The Pilcomayo River Bas<strong>in</strong> forms an <strong>in</strong>ternational sub-bas<strong>in</strong> with<strong>in</strong> the La Plata River Bas<strong>in</strong>. The Commission<br />

is responsible for the study and execution of jo<strong>in</strong>t projects <strong>in</strong> the Pilcomayo River.<br />

This commission was based on a common <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g commerce between Argent<strong>in</strong>a and Uruguay.<br />

In order to facilitate this commerce, a bridge was created across the Plata River which runs between the two<br />

national territories. One of the responsibilities of COBAICO is oversee<strong>in</strong>g the susta<strong>in</strong>able management and<br />

preservation of the Plata River.<br />
