IUCN project: International System of Protected Areas for Peace<br />

In February of 1988 at the XII General Assembly of the IUCN, the M<strong>in</strong>isters of Natural Resources of Nicaragua<br />

and Costa Rica signed a letter of <strong>in</strong>tent to facilitate the establishment of an International System of<br />

Protected Areas for Peace (SI-A-PAZ). In 1989 the countries requested the cont<strong>in</strong>ued participation of IUCN,<br />

which acted to some extent as broker between the countries, <strong>in</strong> order to strengthen the b<strong>in</strong>ational <strong>in</strong>tentions<br />

for biodiversity conservation which were viewed favorably by the <strong>in</strong>ternational community. In August of 1990<br />

at the meet<strong>in</strong>g of the Central <strong>America</strong>n Commission on Environment and Development (CCAD) the M<strong>in</strong>isters<br />

of Natural Resources established a SI-A-PAZ National Commission <strong>in</strong> each country as well as a B<strong>in</strong>ational<br />

Coord<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g Commission.<br />

Agualtiplano is a virtual center of <strong>in</strong>formation about water resources of the area, create to compile, organize,<br />

analyze and spread the <strong>in</strong>formation that identifies problem areas, to identify knowledge caveats, to promote<br />

applied <strong>in</strong>vestigation, to solve conflicts that <strong>in</strong>volve the <strong>in</strong>digenous populations and as a reference for<br />

draft<strong>in</strong>g up proposals and policies for the altiplánicas zones of Argent<strong>in</strong>a, Bolivia, Chile, and Peru.<br />
