RHINE<br />

ICPR Project: Rhine Action Program (RAP)<br />

The overall goal of the program is to improve water quality by meeting the following objectives, by the year<br />

2000: (1) To create conditions that can support the return of higher trophic level species such as Salmon<br />

salar; (2) To protect the Rhine River as a source for drinking water; (3) To decrease the contamination of<br />

sediments, suspended matter, and the biota due to toxic compounds; (4) To meet water quality standards<br />

mandated in the North Sea Action Plan.<br />

ICPR project: Program 2020 on the sustainable development of the Rhine<br />

The program defines general Rhine protection targets forthe next 20 years and succeeds the Rhine Action<br />

Program. The focal points are the further improvement of the Rhine ecosystem, the improvement of flood<br />

prevention and protection and groundwater protection. The continued monitoring of the state of the Rhine<br />

and the further improvement of water quality remain essential.<br />
