The two major Community Water Supply Projects cover<br />

11 districts including Matale, K<strong>and</strong>y, Nuwara-Elliya,<br />

Kurunegala, Badulla, Matara, Ratnapaura, Colombo,<br />

Gampaha, Anuradhapura <strong>and</strong> Hambantota. The total<br />

investment in rural water supply has increased from Rs.<br />

595 million in 2005 to Rs. 1,667 million in <strong>2008</strong>. A total <strong>of</strong><br />

1,435 Grama Niladari divisions are to be fully covered by<br />

2009 under these two projects. As at end <strong>2008</strong>, 517 Grama<br />

Niladari divisions have been covered. Community Based<br />

Organizations (CBOs) are responsible for operation <strong>and</strong><br />

maintenance <strong>of</strong> these schemes. It is also expected that the<br />

Provincial Councils would play a greater role in this regard.<br />
