Upper Kotmale Hydropower Project<br />

A 150 MW Hydro Power Plant is being constructed at<br />

Thalawakele which will add 409 Gw/h annually for the<br />

country’s power generation by diverting the water <strong>of</strong><br />

Kotmale Oya at Thalawakele intake dam to a 12.5km length<br />

headrace tunnel <strong>and</strong> then to the power house which is<br />

located at about 1 km downstream <strong>of</strong> Pundalu Oya <strong>and</strong><br />

Kotmale Oya.<br />

The main civil works <strong>and</strong> hydro & electro mechanical<br />

works are underway. The power plant is expected to be<br />

commissioned in 2011.<br />

Galle Port Development Project<br />

The Government <strong>of</strong> Japan has <strong>of</strong>fered a loan <strong>of</strong> US $<br />

135 mn to develop the Port <strong>of</strong> Galle as a regional port by<br />

constructing an outer breakwater to maintain calmness <strong>of</strong><br />

the port to facilitate the berth <strong>of</strong> large vessels <strong>and</strong> a new<br />

multipurpose terminal to meet the future dem<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> to<br />

reallocate break bulk cargo h<strong>and</strong>ling from the Colombo Port.<br />

The new terminal will help to reduce the waiting time <strong>of</strong><br />

the vessels, berth occupancy ratio <strong>and</strong> cater to large vessels.<br />

Furthermore the project will greatly facilitate the Southern<br />

area development plan presently being implemented. This<br />

project will increase the cargo h<strong>and</strong>ling capacity up to 3.3<br />

million metric ton per annum.<br />
