Box 2.7<br />

Water <strong>and</strong> Sanitation Services Exp<strong>and</strong>ed Contd.<br />

Community Water Supply <strong>and</strong> Sanitation Projects are<br />

being implemented in the estate sector, where the drinking<br />

water supply is an acute problem. The following 09 estates<br />

/ divisions in the Nuwara Eliya district were covered on a<br />

pilot basis in collaboration with the estate management:<br />

Diagama East 2nd Division, Torrington Estate, Wanaraja<br />

Estate, Poistan Estate, Diagama East 3rd Division,<br />

Kotiyagala Lower, Middle, Upper <strong>and</strong> Colony Divisions <strong>of</strong><br />

the Kotiyagala Estate.<br />

Milestones <strong>2008</strong><br />

• ADB Assisted Third Water Supply <strong>and</strong> Sanitation Sector Project - Total Cost Rs.13,582 million - No. <strong>of</strong> Beneficiaries<br />

– 1 million in Anuradhapura , Kalutara, Ranna, Kakkapalliya, Kegalle, Wellawaya <strong>and</strong> Kekirawa - 886 Small scale<br />

water supply systems in 1,000 Grama Niladari Divisions.<br />

• Greater Galle Water Supply Project Stage II -Total Cost Rs. 2,711 million -391 km <strong>of</strong> distribution system laid in<br />

Akmeemana, Bope Poddala <strong>and</strong> part <strong>of</strong> Hikkaduwa <strong>and</strong> Habaraduwa Pradeshiya Sabha areas.<br />

• New Water Supply Scheme for Thirukkovil <strong>and</strong> Augmentation <strong>of</strong> Tangalle <strong>and</strong> Puttalam Schemes - Total cost Rs.<br />

2,280 million- 30,000 people in Thirukkovil area –52,000 people in Tangalle <strong>and</strong> Beliatta with improved capacity from<br />

6,500m3/day to 15,000 m3/day.<br />

• Augmentation <strong>of</strong> Ampara, Nawalapitiya <strong>and</strong> Koggala Water Supply Scheme -Total Cost Rs. 2,670 million - Pipe borne<br />

water to Nawalapitiya, Ampara, Koggala, Habaraduwa Pradeshiya Sabha area.- 89,000 people will be able to obtain<br />

pipe borne water facilities.<br />

• Water Supply to Hambantota, Ambalantota, Weligama, <strong>and</strong> Kataragama - Total Cost Rs. 2,126 million - Provision <strong>of</strong><br />

28,000 new connections <strong>and</strong> service level improvements-Commissioning <strong>of</strong> three new treatment plants at Weligama-<br />

Kataragama - Ambalantota- Improvement <strong>of</strong> existing distribution system from Kataragama to Sella Kataragama is<br />

underway.<br />

Flagship Projects Beyond <strong>2008</strong><br />

Town South K<strong>and</strong>y Water Supply Scheme (Total Cost, Rs. 9,626 million)<br />

The total water production <strong>of</strong> this project is 53,000 cu.m./ per day <strong>and</strong> expects to provide pipe borne water facilities to around<br />

350,000 people in Peradeniya, Pilimatalawa, Kadugannawa, Murutalawa, Danture, Gampola, Ulapne <strong>and</strong> Welamboda. About<br />

73 percent <strong>of</strong> project works has been completed as at the end <strong>of</strong> <strong>2008</strong>.<br />

Nuwara Eliya District Group Water Supply Project (Total Cost, Rs. 4,511 million)<br />

Covering six major towns <strong>of</strong> Rikillagaskada, Ginigathhena, Walapane, Maskeliya, Ragala <strong>and</strong> Hatton in the Nuwara Eliya<br />

district. The number <strong>of</strong> beneficiaries are estimated at 96,000. About 65 percent <strong>of</strong> project works has been completed.<br />

Secondary Towns & Rural Community-based Water Supply & Sanitation<br />

(Total Cost, Rs.19,272 million)<br />

Safe drinking water supply facilities to 829,000 people <strong>and</strong> sanitation facilities to 171,500 people in four urban centers at<br />

Hambantota, Batticaloa, Muttur <strong>and</strong> Polonnaruwa <strong>and</strong> in the rural areas <strong>of</strong> the North Central Province are covered by this<br />

project.<br />

Water Treatment Plants at Ambatale <strong>and</strong> Negombo Desalination Plant (Total Cost, Rs. 2,690 million)<br />

The construction <strong>of</strong> a full treatment plant at Ambatale with the capacity <strong>of</strong> 50,000 m3 to provide treated water to Moratuwa<br />

<strong>and</strong> Panadura areas <strong>and</strong> a desalination plant with capacity <strong>of</strong> 3,000 m3/day to supply water to the Negombo area is in<br />

progress.<br />

Tsunami Affected Area Rebuilding Project (Total Cost –Rs. 1,220 mn)<br />

Provision <strong>of</strong> water supply facilities through the construction <strong>of</strong> 29 new schemes <strong>and</strong> improving the existing schemes in<br />

Tsunami affected areas <strong>of</strong> Hambantota, Batticaloa <strong>and</strong> Trincomalee districts are being undertaken. Out <strong>of</strong> 29 sub schemes, 8<br />

in Hambantota <strong>and</strong> Muttur were completed.<br />
