Government has also embarked on development <strong>of</strong> irrigation<br />

schemes in the Eastern Province. Construction work <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Allai extension scheme with the World Bank assistance<br />

including the dis-silting <strong>of</strong> Raja-Ela , building <strong>of</strong> radial gates<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Marvil-Aru, rehabilitation <strong>of</strong> the Verugal Anicut <strong>and</strong><br />

the Mahaweli flood bund at Neelapola has commenced.<br />

Further, rehabilitation <strong>of</strong> most <strong>of</strong> the other tanks <strong>and</strong> channels<br />

in all three districts such as Unnichchi, Rugam, Morawewa,<br />

Kurangupanchan are in progress. These projects would<br />

benefit around 30,000 families in the Eastern Province.<br />

agriculture, community <strong>and</strong> rural development, along with<br />

data entry operators <strong>and</strong> sports <strong>of</strong>ficers have been absorbed<br />

to the public sector during this period.<br />

A Human Resource Development programme has been<br />

carried out in the Eastern Province at a cost <strong>of</strong> over Rs.<br />

3,500 million with the construction <strong>of</strong> school buildings,<br />

hostels, assembly halls, playgrounds, toilets, health clinics,<br />

dispensaries etc. Meanwhile, the government has also<br />

strengthened the human resource capacity in the region<br />

by appointing 86 medical <strong>of</strong>ficers, 105 nurses, 14 dental<br />

surgeons, 125 midwives <strong>and</strong> 28 public health inspectors.<br />

Over 4,500 teachers, consisting <strong>of</strong> graduate teachers, part<br />

time English teachers, volunteer teachers, second language<br />

teachers <strong>and</strong> NCC English teachers have also been absorbed<br />

during this period. To enable smooth functioning <strong>of</strong> service<br />
