improve the capacity <strong>of</strong> teachers. A 100 number <strong>of</strong> Teacher<br />
Centers were also established under the Provincial Councils,<br />
in order to ensure the pr<strong>of</strong>essional development <strong>of</strong> teachers<br />
serving in the provincial school system.<br />
Teacher Training Programmes were conducted continuously<br />
to enhance the quality <strong>of</strong> teaching. A school-based teacher<br />
development programme was implemented in <strong>2008</strong> to<br />
Infrastructure development in Teachers’ Colleges <strong>and</strong><br />
Colleges <strong>of</strong> Education were carried out during the year<br />
<strong>2008</strong> aiming at further expansion <strong>of</strong> the training facilities<br />
available in these centres. Funds amounting to Rs. 138<br />
million have been channeled for the provision <strong>of</strong> equipment<br />
<strong>and</strong> furniture, <strong>and</strong> for the construction <strong>and</strong> renovation <strong>of</strong><br />
buildings <strong>and</strong> lecture halls etc. in these colleges.<br />
Better Use <strong>of</strong> Information Communication Technology (ICT) in Education<br />
The Government has given priority for development <strong>of</strong> ICT in education for the entire school population covering all the<br />
schools in the county. Accordingly, action was taken to provide a network <strong>of</strong> computers for 25 new computer laboratories in<br />
national schools <strong>and</strong> increased the number <strong>of</strong> computer learning centres in provincial schools with the financial assistance<br />
provided under the Secondary Education Modernization Project. As at end <strong>2008</strong>, 817 Computers have been provided to<br />
National <strong>and</strong> Plantation Schools, <strong>and</strong> Computer Resources Centers throughout the isl<strong>and</strong> with a view to exp<strong>and</strong> the<br />
facilities for better use <strong>of</strong> ICT in education. Meanwhile, action has been taken to develop 20 selected schools as e-villages<br />
under the Education Project for Knowledge Society (EKSP) while training 4,190 teachers <strong>and</strong> 508 <strong>of</strong>ficers on e-citizen.<br />
Under the ‘School Net’ Project, internet <strong>and</strong> e-mail facilities have been provided to 1,200 educational institutions including<br />
schools, all Zonal Education Offices, Provincial Education Departments, Provincial <strong>and</strong> Zonal Information Technology<br />
Centers <strong>and</strong> National Colleges <strong>of</strong> Education.<br />
