Development Assistance from Bilateral Western Countries Contd.<br />

Dikkowita Fishery Harbour<br />

The Dikkowita Fishery Harbour will have a 13 ha <strong>of</strong> harbour<br />

area enclosed by 1,100 meters <strong>of</strong> rubble mound breakwaters<br />

with berthing facility for 490 fishing boats <strong>of</strong> different sizes<br />

with maximum draft <strong>of</strong> 2.3 meters <strong>and</strong> 1,150 meters <strong>of</strong><br />

berthing length for parking <strong>of</strong> boats. It will also have the<br />

facilities such as buildings for catch receiving, fish cleaning<br />

<strong>and</strong> auctioning, cold stores, freezing facilities <strong>and</strong> ice plants,<br />

other buildings related to fishery activities, slipways for ship<br />

repairs <strong>and</strong> utilities.<br />

Kelani Right Bank Water Treatment Plant<br />

The Government Denmark provided an interest free loan<br />

<strong>of</strong> US$ 82.7 million for the construction <strong>of</strong> the Kelani Right<br />

Bank Water Treatment Plant under the Danish Mixed Credit<br />

programme. The project is proposed to improve the water<br />

supply to Colombo City <strong>and</strong> the towns north <strong>of</strong> the Colombo<br />

City. The project is proposed to develop head works <strong>of</strong> the 40<br />

MGD Water Treatment Plant in Gampaha District <strong>and</strong> serve<br />

350,000 population with existing connections presently<br />

experiencing inadequate water supply.<br />

Oluvil Port Development Project<br />

The Government Denmark provided US$ 72.5 million interest<br />

free loan to construct the Oluvil Port.The project is proposed<br />

to improve the capability to cater to large ships with in-built<br />

tanks exceeding the eight meter depth level mark. The main<br />

harbour is expected to be spread over 16 hectares <strong>and</strong> during<br />

stage two the depth is to be increased to 11 metres enabling<br />

to cater to large vessels weighing over 16,000 tons.<br />

Rehabilitation <strong>of</strong> Wimalasurendra <strong>and</strong> New Laxapana<br />

Power Station<br />

The Government <strong>of</strong> France provided a loan <strong>of</strong> US$ 55.2 million<br />

to rehabilitate the New Laxapana <strong>and</strong> Wimalasurendra<br />

Power Stations. These two power stations were constructed<br />

in 1974 <strong>and</strong> 1965 respectively.<br />

Most <strong>of</strong> the mechanical <strong>and</strong> electrical equipment in these<br />

power stations are very old <strong>and</strong> have exceeded their life<br />

span. Under this project, it is expected to increase power<br />

generation <strong>of</strong> the two power stations by 25 percent after<br />

refurbishment. It will also reduce the number <strong>of</strong> failures <strong>and</strong><br />

shut down time due to such failures.<br />

Supply <strong>of</strong> Modern Medical Equipments for Teaching<br />

Hospital in Kurunegala<br />

The Government <strong>of</strong> Austria provided US$ 11.5 million an<br />

interest free Credit Facility to supply medical equipment<br />

for the Teaching Hospital in Kurunegala <strong>and</strong> other essential<br />

Government Hospitals in Sri Lanka. The Kurunegala<br />

Teaching Hospital is being developed under a Master Plan<br />

prepared by the <strong>Ministry</strong> <strong>of</strong> Healthcare <strong>and</strong> Nutrition to<br />

enhance the capacity <strong>of</strong> patients care in cardiology, oncology<br />

<strong>and</strong> maternity.<br />

Kirindiya Oya Water Supply Project<br />

The Government <strong>of</strong> Austria provided an interest free loan <strong>of</strong><br />

US$ 14.80 million for the rehabilitation <strong>and</strong> augmentation<br />

<strong>of</strong> Kirindiya Oya Water Supply Project. The project was<br />

designed for the improvements in the water resources from<br />

Veheragala Scheme. The main components <strong>of</strong> the project<br />

are to increase the capacity <strong>of</strong> the water treatment plant<br />

by 6500m3/day <strong>and</strong> to extend the water supply system to<br />

Lunugamvehera, Weerawila, Pannegamuwa, B<strong>and</strong>agiriya<br />

<strong>and</strong> Beralihela areas.<br />

Regional Bridge Project<br />

The Regional Bridge Project is being financed with Export<br />

Credit facility guaranteed by the Government <strong>of</strong> the United<br />

Kingdom amounting to US$ 101.8 million (stg.50 m.) Scope <strong>of</strong><br />

the project is to construct 59 bridges <strong>and</strong> 7 flyovers with the<br />

twin objectives <strong>of</strong> increasing economic <strong>and</strong> social mobility <strong>of</strong><br />

in the regions <strong>and</strong> easing traffic burden in the city <strong>of</strong> Colombo<br />

<strong>and</strong> suburbs. Flyovers are designed to construct at Kelaniya<br />

railway crossing, Nugegoda Junction, Dehiwala, Rajagiriya<br />

<strong>and</strong> Panadura Junction where traffic is heavy in most <strong>of</strong> the<br />

time. At present flyovers at Kelaniya <strong>and</strong> Nugegoda are in<br />

operation. Flyovers at Dehiwala Junction, Rajagiriya <strong>and</strong><br />

Panadura are scheduled to commence in 2009.<br />

The other 59 bridges are scattered throughout the isl<strong>and</strong><br />

mostly in rural areas where linkage is necessary to regional<br />

centres to promote development by increasing the access.<br />
