The power sector development programme undertaken under<br />

the “Negenahira Navodaya” programme has improved the<br />

electrification levels in the region from 48 percent in 2005<br />

to 59 percent by <strong>2008</strong>. Also it is envisaged in increasing the<br />

power generation capacity through the construction <strong>of</strong> a 500<br />

mw coal power plant in Trincomalee.<br />

commencement <strong>of</strong> school bus service, building <strong>of</strong> model bus<br />

depots <strong>and</strong> restrooms. Under the port development activities,<br />

the construction work <strong>of</strong> the Oluvil port construction has<br />

commenced.<br />

Developments undertaken in Eastern Area - Water<br />

Supply<br />

• Increase <strong>of</strong> capacity <strong>of</strong> water treatment plant from 3.86<br />

million gallons per day (mgd) to 15.86 mgd to extend<br />

the provision to towns in the Eastern Coastal area <strong>of</strong><br />

Ampara District i.e. mainly Ampara, Potuvil, Kalmunai<br />

& Samanturai.<br />

• 6,500 cubic meters/day to Ampara UC area (benefiting<br />

28,000).<br />

• Water supply scheme to Potuvil.<br />

• Rehabilitation <strong>of</strong> Tsunami affected area water supply<br />

schemes in Batticalo, Trincomalee & Ampara.<br />

• Improvements in the small schemes <strong>of</strong> Serunuwara,<br />

Orris Hill, Thampalakamam etc.<br />

Development<br />

In order to improve the transport sector in the region,<br />

Government has invested Rs. 69 million between 2006-<strong>2008</strong><br />

with the provision <strong>of</strong> new buses, construction <strong>of</strong> bus stations,<br />

<strong>Ministry</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Finance</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Planning</strong> Sri Lanka<br />
