The total savings mobilized through several savings<br />
programme has reached Rs. 70 million at the end <strong>of</strong> <strong>2008</strong>.<br />
In addition to the minors, senior citizens <strong>and</strong> the ladies<br />
savings accounts the Bank has <strong>of</strong>fered a unique product<br />
line to its customers through an insurance deposit scheme<br />
viz. Divisewana <strong>and</strong> Shakthi which <strong>of</strong>fers unmatchable life<br />
insurance benefits. The Bank’s first branch located at Head<br />
Office at No.110, D S Senanayake Mawatha Borella has a<br />
customer base <strong>of</strong> more than 2200 customers.<br />
K<strong>and</strong>y <strong>and</strong> Wennappuwa in year <strong>2008</strong>. The bank <strong>of</strong>fered<br />
long term development loans at concessionary rates to<br />
viable projects particularly in less developed <strong>and</strong> lagging<br />
areas <strong>of</strong> the country.<br />
The total amount <strong>of</strong> project loans approved by the bank as<br />
at 31st December <strong>2008</strong> was Rs. 3,449.98 mn <strong>and</strong> the total<br />
disbursement was Rs. 2,273.9 mn.<br />

As rural population has been identified as the target market<br />
<strong>of</strong> SLSB, steps have been taken to exp<strong>and</strong> low cost service<br />
outlets in un-banked <strong>and</strong> under-banked areas through the<br />
postal network during the year.<br />
In addition, actions have been initiated to amend the<br />
Articles <strong>of</strong> Association to engage in micro-financing to carry<br />
out social responsible programmes in order to improve living<br />
environment <strong>of</strong> the rural population <strong>and</strong> to develop income<br />
generating opportunities for them.<br />
Lankaputhra Development Bank<br />
Lankaputhra Development Bank was established on 24th<br />
February 2006 under the Banking Act No. 30 <strong>of</strong> 1988 as the<br />
only development bank owned by the Government with<br />
a view to fulfilling the financial needs <strong>of</strong> the small <strong>and</strong><br />
medium scale industries, agriculture, tourism <strong>and</strong> other<br />
service sectors.<br />

The number <strong>of</strong> loans <strong>and</strong> amounts granted <strong>and</strong> employment<br />
opportunities generated by the bank during the year <strong>2008</strong><br />
are given in Table 7.11.<br />
The Lankaputhra Development Bank has exp<strong>and</strong>ed its<br />
operational capacity by opening another two branches in<br />
<strong>Ministry</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Finance</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Planning</strong> Sri Lanka<br />
