Taking Services to the People<br />

During 2006-<strong>2008</strong>, a number <strong>of</strong> development projects were<br />

initiated aiming at further addressing the key health issues<br />

<strong>of</strong> providing equal access to healthcare while paying special<br />

attention to North <strong>and</strong> East provinces. Several projects on<br />

hospital development were completed in <strong>2008</strong>, minimizing<br />

the imbalances in the service delivery <strong>of</strong> healthcare.<br />

Key Developments in Curative Healthcare<br />

Anuradhapura General Hospital: Constructed a four storied ward complex at a cost <strong>of</strong> Rs 110 million <strong>and</strong> a Renal Dialysis<br />

<strong>and</strong> Research Unit at a cost <strong>of</strong> Rs 45 Million<br />

Cancer Hospital Maharagama: Constructed a building to install a Linear Accelerator Machine at a cost <strong>of</strong> Rs120 million<br />

while providing a Linear Accelerator Machine worth <strong>of</strong> Rs 610 million.<br />

Centre <strong>of</strong> excellence in Nephrology at Maligawatte, Colombo: Established a centre <strong>of</strong> excellence in Nephrology with facilities<br />

for diagnosis, dialysis <strong>and</strong> kidney transplantation surgery at a cost <strong>of</strong> Rs. 405 million.<br />

Kantale <strong>and</strong> Nillayadi Base Hospitals, Badulla General Hospital, Kalmunai South Hospital, Murunkan District Hospital,<br />

Mullaitivu District Hospital <strong>and</strong> K<strong>and</strong>y Teaching Hospital: Constructed staff quarters for Medical Officers utilizing<br />

Rs 45 million<br />

Kurunegala Teaching Hospital – Completed Stage I <strong>of</strong> Maternity Ward Complex at a cost <strong>of</strong> Rs 120 million<br />

Kuliyapitiya, Puttalam, Kantale, Diyathalawa, Horana, Dambulla, Mahiyanganaya, Kalmunai North, Awissawella, Panadura,<br />

Balapitiya, Embilipitiya, Wathupitiwala <strong>and</strong> Homagama Hospitals: Developed infrastructure facilities in above 14 hospitals<br />

in less privileged areas at a cost <strong>of</strong> Rs 256 million<br />

Nursing School at Ampara: Constructed the Ampara Nursing School at a cost <strong>of</strong> Rs. 350 million with Red Cross assistance<br />

Badulla General Hospital – Constructed a drug store at a cost <strong>of</strong> Rs 46 million<br />

Nuwara Eliya Base Hospital – Developed a Maternity ward <strong>and</strong> a Administrative Building Block at a cost <strong>of</strong> Rs 100 million<br />

Kurunegala Teaching Hospital: Supplied medical equipment worth <strong>of</strong> Rs 864 million with the assistance <strong>of</strong> the Austrian<br />

Government<br />

Medical Equipment: Provided bio medical equipment worth <strong>of</strong> Rs 434 million to hospitals isl<strong>and</strong> wide.<br />

The construction <strong>of</strong> Neuro Trauma Unit at the National<br />

Hospital, Colombo is one <strong>of</strong> the key projects nearing<br />

completion. The total cost <strong>of</strong> this unit is Rs. 2,137 million<br />

<strong>and</strong> it is being constructed with the assistance <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Government <strong>of</strong> Saudi Arabia. Establishment <strong>of</strong> this eight<br />

storied unit expects to provide state <strong>of</strong> the art healthcare<br />

facilities for patients with neurological problems.<br />

Moreover, the construction <strong>of</strong> the Epilepsy Unit at a cost <strong>of</strong><br />

Rs 2,918 million with the assistance <strong>of</strong> the Government <strong>of</strong><br />

Saudi <strong>and</strong> the 3rd Medical Ward Complex at a cost <strong>of</strong> Rs.<br />

375 million at the National Hospital, is expected to enhance<br />

the capacity <strong>of</strong> providing specialized <strong>and</strong> quality healthcare<br />

facilities for people.<br />
