dental surgeries etc. through the establishment <strong>of</strong> Private<br />

Health Regulatory Council under the Private Medical<br />

Institutions Act No. 21 <strong>of</strong> 2006.<br />

Indigenous System <strong>of</strong> Medicine (ISM)<br />

The support given by the Government for the development<br />

<strong>of</strong> traditional systems <strong>of</strong> medicine continued further in <strong>2008</strong>.<br />

The total investment for the development <strong>of</strong> Indigenous<br />

<strong>and</strong> Ayurvedic Medicine sectors have increased from Rs.<br />

683 million in 2007 to Rs.739 million in <strong>2008</strong> indicating a 8<br />

percent increase over 2007.<br />

Osu Govi Gammana, one <strong>of</strong> the key development projects<br />

commenced in 2005 to cultivate 12 identified varieties <strong>of</strong><br />

medicinal plants with the intension <strong>of</strong> minimizing the costs<br />

involved in importation <strong>of</strong> such products, was converted to<br />

an Osu Govi Company Limited in <strong>2008</strong> ensuring independent<br />

operation <strong>of</strong> the program.<br />

A greater emphasis has also been given to improve the<br />

preventive health services with the application <strong>of</strong> Ayurvedic<br />

system <strong>of</strong> medicine. Moreover, development <strong>of</strong> the Ayurveda<br />

Teaching Hospital at Borella (Master Plan), Helaveda Medura<br />

Program, <strong>and</strong> the Development <strong>of</strong> Homeopathy System are<br />

some <strong>of</strong> the major interventions successfully carried out with<br />

the intention <strong>of</strong> developing curative health care services in<br />

<strong>2008</strong>. Construction work <strong>of</strong> the ward complex at Ayurveda<br />

Teaching Hospital at Borella is now nearing completion <strong>of</strong><br />

which the total cost is Rs 1,204 million. A special emphasis<br />

was also given on Ayurveda Research with the initiation <strong>of</strong><br />

the Mihintale Research Hospital at a cost <strong>of</strong> Rs. 587 million<br />

in <strong>2008</strong> while constructing the Hambantota Ayurveda<br />

Hospital at a cost <strong>of</strong> Rs. 117 million.<br />

However, the Government continues to ensure that<br />

the patients get value for their money at private health<br />

institutions by registering the private medical institutions<br />

such as hospitals, nursing homes, channel consultations,<br />

<strong>Ministry</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Finance</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Planning</strong> Sri Lanka<br />
