Electricity: Energizing Growth Contd.<br />

Progress <strong>of</strong> the Flagships Projects -<strong>2008</strong><br />

Project<br />

Kerawalapitiya Combined Cycle Power Project ( 170 MW)<br />

The project started commercial operation in <strong>2008</strong> by adding 170 MW to the<br />

national grid.<br />

Norchhcolai Coal Power plant ( 300 MW)<br />

Filling in the construction site was completed <strong>and</strong> the construction work on the<br />

foundation <strong>of</strong> the power plant has been commenced.<br />

All surveys related to the construction <strong>of</strong> transmission line were completed.<br />

Preliminary work for the construction <strong>of</strong> the jetty for coal h<strong>and</strong>ling was completed.<br />

74 houses were constructed for affected families.<br />

Upper Kotmale Hydro Power project ( 150 MW)<br />

Construction <strong>of</strong> quarters for employers <strong>and</strong> engineers was completed. Two 33 kv<br />

transmission lines were completed. Generating equipment work contract was<br />

awarded.<br />

River diversions work, excavations <strong>of</strong> access tunnel <strong>and</strong> cable tunnel was<br />

completed. C<strong>of</strong>fer dam in the outlet area was completed.<br />

Trincomalee Coal power plant ( 500 MW)<br />

The site selection was completed <strong>and</strong> the MOU signed with National Thermal<br />

Power Corporation in India.<br />

Uma Oya ( 90 MW)<br />

A loan agreement was signed in April <strong>2008</strong> with the Export Development Bank <strong>of</strong><br />

Iran (EDBI) for the implementation <strong>of</strong> the project. The total loan amount is<br />

US $ 450 mn.<br />

Transmission Development<br />

To ensure reliable power supply, reducing the present<br />

transmission losses <strong>of</strong> 15 percent <strong>of</strong> net generation to a level <strong>of</strong><br />

12 percent has been identified as a priority. Hence, a number<br />

<strong>of</strong> transmission development <strong>and</strong> improvement projects were<br />

implemented in <strong>2008</strong> at a cost <strong>of</strong> Rs 2,212 million.<br />
