Reid Pit: <strong>Student</strong> Activities Center/Media Center<br />

Reid Pit, located on the lower level of Reid Hall, has access from the <strong>Student</strong><br />

Commons Courtyard. Located in this center is a 62-inch television as well as<br />

complete array of audio-visual equipment. Reid Pit is also a great place to play<br />

foosball, air hockey, pool, or to enjoy a board game. Also located in Reid Pit is<br />

the Media Center: the offices of the <strong>Briar</strong> Patch (yearbook), the <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong><br />

Voice (newspaper), Red Clay (literary journal), and WNRS (radio station).<br />

The Den<br />

The Den, located on the right side of the traffic circle adjacent to Manson<br />

residence hall, is available to students for parties and other programs. It is also a<br />

convenient location to study while students are doing laundry next door.<br />

The EB Room<br />

The EB Room, located in the lower level of Dew Hall, is a large lounge area<br />

where students can study as well as have meetings, programs and other<br />

activities. The area also features a full-size kitchen.<br />

<strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> Outdoor Program<br />

The Outdoor Program office is located on the lower level of Meta Glass Hall.<br />

Tasha Purcell, Director of Outdoor Programs, oversees the programs and is<br />

supported by Outdoor Program student Instructors. The office has many<br />

resources, including rental gear for personal adventures on and off campus.<br />

<strong>Student</strong>s may participate in beginner and intermediate level trips in outdoor<br />

adventures such as climbing, hiking, kayaking, caving, skiing, and more.<br />

<strong>Student</strong>s may also obtain certification for the use of lake canoes and the Outing<br />

Cabin through the Outdoor Program.<br />

Learning on the Land<br />

Since 1997, the Learning on the Land program has introduced new students to<br />

the diverse, 3,200-acre <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> <strong>College</strong> campus landscape. During the<br />

orientation program, new students participate in one of the many educational<br />

programs led by faculty, staff, and upper class students. Opportunities include,<br />

but are not limited to, creating bamboo flutes from an on campus bamboo forest,<br />

experiencing a glimpse of the history of the <strong>College</strong> by walking the lands,<br />

engaging in sustainability education, exploring <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong>’s horticultural<br />

treasures, and participating in team-building activities as students develop<br />

connections with their classmates.<br />

Outdoor Program Instructors<br />

Outdoor Program <strong>Student</strong> Instructors lead peers, faculty, staff, and their guests<br />

on outdoor adventure trips. <strong>Student</strong>s selected for this position are a part of a<br />

special team of leaders who gain both leadership and outdoor adventure skills<br />

taught through an extensive training program and instruction that includes<br />

practical and field experience. Upon completion of training Outdoor Program<br />
