C. Sports Categories
Sports are categorized as NCAA/ODAC varsity, intercollegiate
club or recreational club. Intercollegiate clubs compete against
outside groups and do not normally participate in ODAC
conference play. Varsity sports and intercollegiate clubs operate
under the direction of the Department of Physical Education,
Athletics and Recreation. Recreational club sports student-run
organizations are under the direction and guidelines of Co-
Curricular Life. Recreational club sports do not compete against
outside groups.
Starting a recreational club requires a meeting with the Director of
Student Involvement and Programs regarding the presentation of a
plan to ICC. The manual on clubs and organizations can be found
in the office of student involvement in CCL.
D. Changing sports categories
In order for the department to support changing a sport’s
category, a team must meet (or fail to meet in the case of a
request for de-emphasis) department criteria, for a minimum
period of two academic years. The exception is removing a
sport’s varsity status, in which case the sport must fail to
meet the criteria for a period of 5 years. In addition, the
department must complete a full evaluation of funding and
resource requirements and availability for the requested
status change.
Note: Steps to be a recreational club, intercollegiate
club or varsity team.
1. Apply to be a recreational club team. Once granted
you would need to fulfill all ICC requirements to
remain in that status.
2. To move to intercollegiate club status, compete as a
recreational club for a minimum of two years and
fulfill all the requirements of ICC. Next, apply to the
athletic department for intercollegiate club status.
Consideration requires meeting the club status
criteria (VB.1-6) for a minimum of two years
3. To move to varsity status. First, meet all the club
status criteria (VB.1-6) for a minimum of two years.
Then apply to the Athletic department for varsity
status.
