Section II: The Honor Code and System<br />

The <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> Honor Pledge<br />

<strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> women do not lie, cheat, steal, or violate the rights of others.<br />

Therefore, I pledge to uphold all standards of honorable conduct. I will report<br />

myself and others for any infraction of this pledge.<br />

The Honor Pledge mandates standards that govern the academic behavior of<br />

students as members of the scholarly community, as well students’ nonacademic<br />

conduct as <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> community members.<br />

The Honor Principle<br />

Honor will pervade and define all aspects of life at <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> <strong>College</strong>.<br />

Personal integrity and individual responsibility are essential in <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong><br />

student conduct. Each <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> student pledges to uphold these principles<br />

and the Honor Pledge without reservation. Each <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> student shall adopt<br />

and uphold the aforementioned principles and the Honor Pledge throughout the<br />

duration of her matriculation at <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong>.<br />

Honorable Principle Adherence<br />

The Honor Principle and the other academic and non-academic conduct and<br />

behavior standards applicable to <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> students comprise <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong>’s<br />

student Honor Code. After passing the <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> <strong>Student</strong> Government<br />

Association’s Honor Code test, every student is expected to maintain the Honor<br />

Principle at all times. Attendance at <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> <strong>College</strong> is a privilege, not a<br />

right. Therefore, any student whose behavior is proven to disregard the Honor<br />

Principle is subject to accountability and disciplinary action that may result in<br />

removal from the <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> community.<br />

<strong>Student</strong> Self-Governance<br />

<strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> women consciously choose to govern themselves by the high<br />

standards of the Honor Principle, and with this choice they are allowed the<br />

privilege and responsibility of administering and enforcing this Principle for the<br />

actions of themselves and their peers. The Judicial System is the studentgoverned<br />

procedural system with responsibility for upholding and enforcing the<br />

Honor Principle. The Judicial System is not a legal process, and does not include<br />

many of the rights provided by the court system. No attorneys are allowed to be<br />

present at or participate in the <strong>Student</strong> Government Association’s judicial<br />

process at any point.<br />

If she believes she has broken either the Standards of Academic or Non-<br />

Academic Conduct, she must report herself to a member or Chair of the Judicial<br />

Committee. If she has direct knowledge that another student has broken the<br />

Standards, she must report the violation to a member or Chair with 72 hours.<br />
