<strong>College</strong> activities or privileges for which the student might otherwise be<br />
eligible. A determination of the appropriateness and the extent of the<br />
interim suspension shall be made in the sole discretion of the Dean of the<br />
Faculty, or the Dean of Co-Curricular Life. Whenever interim sanctions<br />
are imposed, a hearing by the Judicial Committee shall be convened at the<br />
earliest reasonable possible time after the imposition. In the sole<br />
discretion of the Dean of the Faculty or the Dean of Co-Curricular Life,<br />
the interim sanction may remain in effect until a final decision has been<br />
reached, including completion of the appropriate appeals process.<br />
The <strong>College</strong> further reserves the right to exclude at any time, following<br />
established procedures that protect individual rights, any student whose<br />
conduct or academic standing it regards as unacceptable in a community<br />
of scholars and students. Any student accepting a place in the <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong><br />
<strong>College</strong> community should know that the <strong>College</strong> will not tolerate illegal<br />
acts or extremes of social behavior which ignore the rights of others or<br />
are injurious to individuals, the community, or to the <strong>College</strong>.<br />
c. There are certain other circumstances that may not rise to the level of an<br />
immediate risk to the safety of the campus community but in in which the<br />
nature, extent or severity of a matter warrants redirection of a case from<br />
the Honor system to the Administration for investigation and resolution<br />
(“Administrative Review”) in order to maintain the well-being or<br />
effective functioning of the <strong>College</strong>. The appropriate Judicial Chair will,<br />
in consultation with her respective advisor, or the Dean of Co-Curricular<br />
Life in Non-Academic matters/Dean of the Faculty in Academic matters<br />
in consultation with the applicable Chairwoman, determine that a case<br />
will be referred to an Administrative Review.<br />
When a student matter is referred by the Honor system to Administrative<br />
Review, the President will appoint a senior officer of the <strong>College</strong> other<br />
than the Dean of Co-Curricular Life (“CCL”) to lead an investigation<br />
(“Investigator”).<br />
Investigation<br />
a. The Investigator at her/his discretion may work with another Senior Staff officer<br />
of the <strong>College</strong> on the investigation.<br />
b. The Investigator will confer with the appropriate student Judicial Chair<br />
throughout the investigation.<br />
c. The investigation will be maintained as confidential unless a violation of law<br />
appears to have occurred that warrants the involvement of law enforcement<br />
agencies. All participants in the investigation will agree to observe confidentiality<br />
throughout the process and the outcome.<br />
d. The Investigator may use judgment and discretion as to methods of gathering<br />
evidence, including but not limited to, interviewing witnesses in person or by<br />
teleconference and making a record of interviews, soliciting written statements<br />
from persons with information, and making record of social media interactions or<br />
other public behaviors.<br />
