Involuntary Administrative Withdrawal Policy<br />

In addition to recourse that a student may face for violation of the <strong>Student</strong> Honor<br />

Code pursuant to the student judicial process, there may be circumstances that<br />

require <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> <strong>College</strong> to cause a student to be involuntarily withdrawn<br />

immediately from the <strong>College</strong> to protect the student, the <strong>College</strong> and/or the<br />

<strong>College</strong> community. If the Dean of the Faculty or the Dean of Co-Curricular<br />

Life reasonably determines that a student is:<br />

1. engaging in, or threatening to engage in behavior that risks physical<br />

harm to others<br />

2. through her conduct there is an observation of actions and/or statements<br />

that indicate safety and/or code of conduct issues; in this case, an<br />

individual assessment may be required that will be made in<br />

consultation between <strong>College</strong> staff with an external professional who is<br />

qualified to interpret the evidence<br />

3. failing to adequately care for herself or otherwise satisfy personal needs<br />

that reasonably could result in serious physical harm or death to others,<br />

or engaging in or threatening to engage in behavior that may cause<br />

significant property damage, may impede the lawful activities of others,<br />

or may interfere with the educational process and the orderly operation<br />

of the <strong>College</strong>, then the student will be involuntarily administratively<br />

withdrawn until such a time that the student can satisfy the <strong>College</strong> that<br />

she is no loner a threat. If a student is involuntarily withdrawn, she may<br />

appeal to the President of the <strong>College</strong> in writing within 72 hours of the<br />

time that the <strong>College</strong> provides her with notice of involuntary<br />

withdrawal. Only one appeal is permitted, provided, however, that the<br />

<strong>College</strong> may extend the opportunity of further appeals if the <strong>College</strong>, in<br />

its sole discretion, determines that credible evidence is discovered that<br />

was unknown to the administration of the <strong>College</strong> at the time of making<br />

its decision or at the time of a prior appeal. A student shall be treated as<br />

withdrawn for all purposes during the appeal process.<br />

For purposes of the <strong>College</strong>’s refund policy (as set forth in the <strong>College</strong> Catalog),<br />

the withdrawal date shall be the date on which the student receives notice of<br />

involuntary withdrawal.<br />
